I am no expert, but I think in UK you need GSM 900/1800 and UMTS [STRIKE]1800[/STRIKE]/2100

Yes it will, although it isn't much cheaper than here.

You are looking at $649 + 9% (depends where) + shipping unless you are there. So you are looking at $750 in the UK (£499 @ 1.52 + commission charges) or $710 + shipping.

don't forget the HMRC charges when they find the new shiny toy and impose the import duty....with the much hyped release of the 4s, customs are paying specific attention to all incoming US flights, as this is a nice easy little revenue earner for Her Maj.

Not really. I've come back from the US two times in the last 10 days (yes I'm tired :) ) and no-one that I saw got stopped.

Bit of both but depends wehere you are as to who gets it.

US States put sales tax on top of the sticker price, whereas we usually have VAT included in the sticker price

The amount of tax varies from state to state, there may be State Tax, City Tax and County Tax to consider, and the total %age can vary from 0% to 13.7 % depending on where you are.

Your right though $650 Iphone bought in New York, would add on $60 or so in Tax, so thats $710 in total, which is more or less £450. And you'll need a charger, so add on £25 for an official Apple one or £5 for a cheap clone.

Your saving £25 to £50 but if customs want a slice of it (unlikely but possible) you'd be paying another £90 on top in VAT and £12 in Cutoms Duty, and more if they fine you. Worst case is £575 plus a fine for the £499 UK priced phone.

For most US items when you add it up it not a huge difference over UK prices, it's just "VAT" isn't in the sticker price and by importing you may avoid VAT so it look a lot lower.

It we take the US ex tax sticker price a convert it to UK, it's about £405, Adding the 20% VAT takes it to just under £490, and Apple charge £499. When you look at it that way it's not such a rip off.
