Ok - so new shiney laptop has arrived and I have gone through all the setup. However it is not picking up any wiresless networks at all - went through control panel etc but to no avail. Restarted my hub and restarted new laptop - and still nothing. Network def ok as I am on here on old laptop. Have I forgotten something really obvious ?
Thanks

Is the wireless actually switched on?

Some lappys have an actual switch.

Is your wireless network secured? Have you 'allowed' the new lappy in your router settings?

I concur...I go to a computer club, and (embarrasingly) we spent ages one night trying to work out why someones new laptop couldn't detect wifi networks, only to later spot a big button directly above the keyboard, not only that, but it was also glowing a comforting shade of blue.

What sort computer is it? (make & model)

as others have stated, some laptops have switchs (sometimes one of the function keys) otherwise, have you set your router to braodcast the SSID so that your new laptop can see it?
    Drop a brand challenge
on a £100 shop you might on average get 70 items save
    10p per product = £7 a week ~ £28 a month
    20p per product = £14 a week ~ £56 a month
30p per product = £21 a week ~ £84 a month (or in other words one weeks shoping at the new price)

Also first recommend checking the wireless is enabled on the PC.

If not, check the router settings. On some routers you can opt to NOT broadcast the router's name as a security measure. See if you can connect your laptop to the router with an ethernet cable and check the settings on the router - this usually requires you to enter an IP address similar to 192.168.0.1 into the address bar (check your router set-up instructions for full info).

  • The switch on my laptop is on the front edge, and it also has a software switch on it too.

The manual for that computer says Fn with F8 switches wireless on/off and there's a blue LED to indicate when it is on.
Like many others, been there before!

  • Also, what make of router do you have?

On my router you also have to press a button on the router the first time you connect a wireless device to it in order for them to 'sync'. After that, it connects automatically.
