Car Rental - USA

Hello All, please be patient with me, first post and all!
Im going to the USA in September, me and a friend are hiring a car in Chicago and driving Route 66 to L.A, and then onwards up to San Francisco. The problem with this is that American car hire companies charge a "One-Way Drop Off Fee" which (because of the long nature of the trip) comes to $500.
I have found a company called National Car that have a reduced drop fee of $199 and the rates for their cars seem very good as well. I will be hiring the car for 14 days, and the total cost comes to £374. This figure includes the drop -off fee, Loss Damage Waiver, Liability Insurance, all State taxes and Unlimited Miles.
Does this seem a little too good to be true? HAs anybody else out there used this company? Can anybody think of other hidden charges our American cousins may try to add on top when i get over there?!
Any feedback would be much appreciated

Well I'm an American but I live in Norway now....I travel ALOT and sometimes go home to visit family and of course rent a car when my husband and I go there..We have never used the one-way drop off though.
I like using this company http://www.carjet.co.uk/common/directory/index.php?rf=999999&cl=ORD They have EVERYTHING included and a free tank of gas
Perhaps contact them to see if it's cheaper!

Hi:
I don;t know if you;re the adventurous type but I have driven across the Us several times using Auto-Driveaway which is a way of driving other people's cars cross country.
The only thing you pay for is petrol.
There's an office in Chicago and as you can see from the link below this week they have a car going to California.
https://www.autodriveaway.com
The downside is that you won't know what's available until a couple of days before you leave.
The upside is a very, very cheap way of getting across the US.0
