Proof of ID for solicitor

Going in to solicitors tomorrow to sign documents to (hopefully) complete my house purchase! Been told to bring ID. I don't have any photo ID (passport out of date) but he said driving licence would be OK plus utility bill. Now I don't have any recent bills as it's all direct debit and I get annual statements. But I do have the following recent stuff;
Tax credit award notice
DVLA road tax reminder
Jury duty summons
Bank statement
Credit card statement
Can probably dig out this year's council tax notice
Will these be acceptable do you think?

They normally give you a list of what is acceptable and not acceptable.

DVLA, Bank statement & Council are probably good ones, but to be sure, ask them.

Some solicitors now can do a full id check with just your driving license (you write down your address whilst there and they check it matches the one for your license id)

Should be OK - just take everything you have. Too much better than too little!

You won't be 'completing' tomorrow just getting stuff signed in preparation.
  • I believe the bank and credit card statement, providing they are less than 3 months will be acceptable, and also your council tax notice as long as it is for this year. Two of these together with your driving licence should be sufficient, but I would give them a ring in the morning so you don't have a wasted journey.

Take the expired passport too, if the photo still resembles you then it may be acceptable as ID.

bank statement is fine on top of the driving licence

You've never met a Jobsworth, Timmy?

In a sense all documentation is out of date and proves nothing.
A month old bank statement only proves that someone, possibly you, had some money in the account a month ago.
A month old electricity bill only shows that someone with the name you claim to have had an electricity account. Nothing to prove you are actually him. Maybe you disposed of him, or broke into the house to retrieve a bill while he is away working in Australia.

Who knows? It's all just a matter of reasonable assumptions, presenting a picture that appears to hang together.

I agree I don't see the real significance of an expired passport. Someone doesn't cease to exist because his passport has expired. Would anyone go to the trouble of forging an expired passport?

I bet real money launderers and drug barons don't have the slightest difficulty producing realistic bogus documents.
