I don't know a huge amount about the survey but I deal with Markit most days. They sell asset price data to financial firms.

2,000 people should give an accuracy to within about 3% so it is fair it say that 4-10% probably see finances improving and 34-40% probably see finances improving.

Would the accuracy be affected if they were paid for completing the survey?

Howcome these questions are never asked if it's a rental survey showing rent increases?

    Not sure,

But I dare say a survey asking by how much their rent increased would show a different data to the data of comparable houses rented.

Surveys and hard data don't have to match. Like wise it does not prove one is wrong or right either.

I most probably feel poorer than last year, but in reality I am not. It is odd how environment can change perception.

Being a survey though it is collecting sentiment rather than fact and so will be heavily driven by the negative sentiment in the news/markets. Often in such surveys you get results like: 60% expect the economy to worsen in the next 12 months but only 30% expect their own circumstances to worsen type results.
    I think....

I suspect consumer perception is pretty important to retailers, especially those who sell discretionary goods and who rely on seasonal peaks.

True, but even that at the moment conflicts, sales should have been falling for 4 months based on consumer confidence.

There seems to be a general feeling of pessimism at the moment but the data seems to not be matching.
I think it is all this euro business, we are all expecting the worse, but seem to be carrying on.

Just wondered if people whose circumstances had worsened might find the income from a survey quite handy :)

I do partake in an annual survey. It annoys me that you can't give your reasons behind your answer. The survey questioners only want snap judgements. The less thought the better.

I have no problems with consistent survey methodology. What annoys me is when people pontificate over the results. They could have asked why but they chose not to do so.

I am absolutely shocked that average household unsecured debt is £8000. We really are a nation of fools.

There is only so long we can keep going on with wage inflation at 0% and actual inflation running at over 5% before people start going underwater.
