Just another stottie fan checking in (lived in Durham for four years). They were delish - made a great sandwich. Greggs was just a local baker then, wasn't it, and now it's a big national chain. They are missing a trick - they could put stottie cake on the map all over the country.
Something else I really miss (from having lived in Yorkshire for several years) is Yorkshire curd tarts, as sold by bakers all over the region. Thomas's were lovely. I'm sure I could try making them (bet there are recipes all over the internet), but never have got round to it.Life is mainly froth and bubble

Bad news I'm afraid, the stottie recipe wasn't in the Greggs cookery book (not surprising really!) But the good news is that I've been offered some other recipes out of the book...:D
I haven't tried curd tarts but I will the next time I see a Thomas's (I think there's one in Northallerton?) Thanks for the recommendation.:)
I'm surprised that you can't find a recipe for stottie online. I'll bet that bookshop in the Grainger market has a Geordie recipe book. I'll look next time I'm there.:)The beautiful thing about learning is nobody can take it away from you.

Stottie cakes were a staple food group and an important lunch staple when I studied at Newcastle uni ages ago. I remember getting them from the union building along with a massive slab of date slice for afters - it must have been about a million calories a day, but covered all essential food groups - including lard, I reckon. It took me years to shift the weight once I left, but I certainly wasn't complaining at the time!Reason for edit? Can spell, can't type!0
