Toshiba laptop needs a new CD-RW/DVD-ROM, but which one

Hi I have a Toshiba laptop model P15 - S409 and have established in a previous thread that the CD-RW/DVD-ROM is faulty and needs replacing, I have found different places where I might get one but how do I know what model I need. Do I just take the old one off and read numbers from that or can someone tell from the laptop model?

Also does anyone know, would the laptop still work with the drive removed?

Any help appreciated.

Hi,

The laptop will still work without the drive installed.
Remove the existing cdrw/dvd and look what the model it is. Best place to buy a replacement is Ebay.Your drive may be in a caddy, but you can use this from your old drive.............

misco can probably get you one, but ebay would probably be a cheaper source.

any tips on how to remove it, haven't really noticed any obvious ways to get it seperated from the laptop?

Also looking to replace DVD burner for my laptop (old one may have gone to the great gigastore in the sky). Actually thinking of getting external USB. Dont have to mess with opening up and can then be used on second machine (thinking of getting a cheapy CD rom only for youngest kid)

Also can you choose what to put in? For example if I only had a CR-RW before could I choose to put in a DVD-RW instead? And how would I know what ones would fit?
