Hi,
My Dad has a Sony home cinema dvd system model no DAV/DZ860W which he is very happy with and can use quite easily. With Blu Rays coming out he would like to upgrade the DVD part. Can we buy a cheap blu ray player and connect it via a scart to the cinema system or do we have to get an entire new system?
Thanks x

To get the full potential from blu ray it would be best to get a new system, rather than connecting via scart to the current system!
Blu ray connects via HDMI anyway, so I'm unsure if they would have scart sockets (forgive me if I'm mistaken)
Worth looking at separates tbh if upgrading as in effect you are future proofing yourself for any further advancement in home cinema technology.
By this I mean getting a home cinema amp, speaker set and separate blu ray player, as end of the day the sound is far better on these than the all in ones, and if anything goes wrong, its one component that has to be replaced not the whole lot:D0 -
so to use the system you already have, you would connect the bluray player/ps3 to the TV using HDMI then use an optical cable from the bluray player to the optical in on the sony surround sound system, that way you will get HD picture on your TV from the bluray and also get the full 5.1 sound from the blu ray.
I agree with callistris though that getting separates is better overall, you definitely don't have to replace the DVD surround system now, but in the future when/if it breaks buy a dedicated surround sound unit and not one with bluray/dvd built in.
but to watch blurays now the first paragraph is what you want to do.0 -

Getting full 5.1 surround sound via optical input if available is very much system dependent, most of the all in ones especially the cheaper ones at best will only input 2.0 stereo as they're not capable of processing surround sound from external sources:)
As I said though this does vary from system to system:)0
