However, here are some figures from the HSBC All-Share Index Fund factsheet.
1 yr, HSBC=6.7%, FTSE=7.3%, Sector average=6.7%
3yrs, HSBC=5.9%, FTSE=8.5%, Sector average=6.4%
5yrs, HSBC=6%, FTSE=10.7%, Sector Average=5.7%
The FTSE 100 tracker seems to be even worse.
3yrs, HSBC=4.1%, FTSE=7.1%, Sector Average=6.4%
5yrs, HSBC=3.6%, FTSE=9.8%, Sector Average=5.7%
However, they quote annualised 3yr tracking error as 0.35%
Unless I'm reading this incorrectly, I'm not sure how they can even call it a tracker never mind quote that low tracking error.I am not a financial adviser and neither do I play one on television. I might occasionally give bad advice but at least it's free.

Hmmm, I used Hargreaves Lansdown to chart the HSBC FTSE 100 tracker against the FTSE 100 itself and it looks (by eye) to be pretty close other than when things swing very quickly.I am not a financial adviser and neither do I play one on television. Post below on changes to HSBC AMCs, so maybe care with time frames being assessed for tracking errors:

Yes, that could explain it. The errors are larger further back, and there's also very recent discrepancy as the FTSE is moving very quickly and these funds are forward priced.I am not a financial adviser and neither do I play one on television. Where did you get these figures from? The figures from the current factsheet (30 September 2011) for 1yr, 3yrs and 5yrs are -5.3%, 18.4% and 0.5%.

The PDF I got from HL is the August one, which I guess just shows us how deceptive "point to point" figures can be.I am not a financial adviser and neither do I play one on television. I might occasionally give bad advice but at least it's free.

That's the factsheet I need! Can you just tell me the 1 year figure for the FTSE All-Share Index (second page, second row, under 'Rolling time period returns')? (And just to check we're on the same page, the figure above it, the fund's 1 year figure, should be 6.7%.)0 -

Thanks. Just realised that I could have figured that out from your previous posts (doh!), but much obliged anyway. First reaction is that those figures in my long post look comparable (the Vanguard figure for the index was 7.26%), but those five-year figures you quoted look much better for the HSBC fund (if you allow for 0.5% SDRT, as you previously posted).0 -

So what's the summary? Vanguard generally better, but only if you expect to hold for several years without changing provider/platform/funds/etc.?I am not a financial adviser and neither do I play one on television. I might occasionally give bad advice but at least it's free.
