The thing to bear in mind about buying an inkjet printer is that you shouldn't buy based on the purchase price but should buy based on the cost of ownership. I have an epson D120, original epson cartridges work out at an ink cost of around £700 per litre! And it drinks ink. Fortunately I have found a brand of compatible ink cartridges (InkRite) that work well with it, otherwise I would have binned it a long time ago. So check if compatible ink cartridges are available before you buy.0

Agree. For a long time, HP made printers that were stupidly cheap. In fact, it was often cheaper to buy the same printer again than it was to replace the ink cartridges.
Buying one which has seperate colour inks is always good practice too, as you won't have to replace the whole colour cartridge when just one colour runs out.0 -
Epson released a number of printers where, so far, the compatible cartridges are expensive, though they are usually the same printers being sold at a reduced price as buyers may be avoiding those.
Both the ones you have linked to have more expensive compatibles
John Lewis are selling the HP you have linked to at £39 but PC World have the HP 3070 at £49:99 and an HP Photosmart for £29:99, there is discount code PRINTSCAN10 on printers over £40 at PC World until the 26th of October 2011, so the 3070 would be £45, with a 4800 by 1200 scanner against the 1200 by 1200 scanner with the 3050

If you are likely to print a reasonable amount of photos then one with six or more cartridge will produce better results.
If you can list the things you will want to print, someone may have a suggestion for a good printer to use0 -
i bought an epson all in one from pc world 5 years ago for £ 30
it was cheaper to buy a whole printer with cartridges than cartridges alone ....it has served me well and is still going strong
its a dx4450 all in one the last time i bought cartridges for it a couple of weeks ago off e-bay i got eight two sets of four
two black two yellow two pink two blue...........for £ 4 with shipping i was gobsmacked i normally pay £3 for four
the cartridges are great and last ages for general printing but i dont reckon they would be any good for photeees
hope this helps karl.........0 -

Have not used HP for printers, so of those, the SX425W is available for £39:99 at the moment from Dixons, though it uses the more expensive compatibles, they are available for around £8 a set delivered.

Photo Paper here, amongst others

When using it for photos, set it to best photo, then check for an RPM and a micro weave setting and opt for those if available0 -
If you want a decent but cheap printer with a full load of cartridges ready to go then Staples has the canon MG 5150 for £49.99 right now..

Very good on colour. Seperate ink tanks
Loads of good features like duplex printing extra...

Santer, I hate to tell you this but, the printers you quoted use 364 series cartridges, these are a nightmare as no replacement chips are available, if refilling you have to put the cartridge back in and it will show as empty, on compatibles you have to remove the chip from the empty cartridge and put it on the compatible, again it goes back in as empty, no here's the problem, HP firmware update disguised as an update to improve print quality actually disables the option to continue printing when the ink monitor tells you the cartridges are empty, avoid like the plague any HP machine that uses 364, 920 or 940 series cartridges.I hate football and do wish people wouldn't keep talking about it like it's the most important thing in the world0 -

They are refilled original cartridges, my guess is that they have the original spent chip on them as opposed to compats where you need to use the chip of the old cart, trust me, we deal with most of the major suppliers and none of them can supply a replacement chip for these carts. If they are getting chips then I'd like to know where and also how reliable they are as well.I hate football and do wish people wouldn't keep talking about it like it's the most important thing in the world0
