housing benefit and self employed

im thinking of doing some extra work from home which is commission based and self employed. I am also employed for 16 hours and receive housing and council tax benefit.
How will this work with my benefits? i wont know what im earning in commission for awhile. So how can i submit a change of circumstance? Whenever you do they take weeks to sort it out. And being on only 16 hours, i couldnt afford my rent and bills, and the self employed position you get your commission monthly. I might be rubbish at the job and not make anything at all.
Can you hold of registering yourself as self employed until you know where your at? If i dont earn i wont keep working as self employed.
Hope im making sense? Just all seems very complicated and is putting me off the extra job!
Thanks

As you are self employed you have an obligatioin to register as self employed with the HMRC. You have a time limit before they will give you a penalty.
You will create accounts and give them to the council and they will calculate your housing benefit. You can average your earnings initially over 4 weeks then eventually over the year. If you can see the forecast will change by quite a bit then inform them.:footie:
Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S)
Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money.

I've just registered as SE today. The good news is that tax credits have made the changes immediately (well, I hope) the bad news is that they have stopped my HB claim and have told me I have to reapply! Doh...that's going to be fun...They have told me that I need to fill in a forecast sheet but that's all so far. And to add into the mix, I've got a nil hour contract for an employed position to wrangle with too - this is going to be messy
