we get paid on 26th of each month - if I hand in my notice this wed will I get paid 1 full month on 26th Nov or is it that we get paid early as a gesture and that my employment runs from 31st month each month?

We can't know that. Look at your payslip. That should tell you the period you are being paid for, as well as the actual date you are paid. For example we pay on the 10th for the previous month, so our payslips next time will have a date of 10/11/11 for the payment date, but the period covered will show as 01/10/11 - 31/10/11. But different companies do different things.

As to when to hand in your notice - it makes no difference realistically, you still get paid for one month after you do, whatever date or dates it gets paid on makes no difference to the amount you will receive overall, it might just work out that you get some this month, and some next month, or all this month. But I don't know of anyone who works out their resignation date according to this. Do you think it somehow makes you receive more or less money?

It depends. What does your contract say?

we get paid 3 days from the end of the month and are paid up until the end of the month.

Theoretically then if I hand in my notice on wednesday when we are paid I will get paid until the 25th Nov however which I will only receive 3 weeks pay. I then start my new job on 28th Nov and will get paid in dec 1 month + 2 days so somewhere along the line I have lost out on 3 days of pay which is a big chunk.

    Does that make sense?

    Hi,

You won't lose any pay..... If you work till the 25th Nov you will be paid 19 working days that you did in Nov. In your next job you will be paid for Dec and the 3 days in Nov you will of worked.

I have assumed you work weekdays and not weekends btw
  • My answer to your question would be that in every job I have ever worked in, pay has been made close to the end of the month, but is pay for some time in arrears and a short time in advance - it is always pay until the end of the month.

If you are asking this to calculate what your last payslip will be, you need to include any outstanding holidays - or holidays where you have taken more than your pro-rata entitlement - as you will be

    - paid until your last day of work, and required to take any outstanding holidays before you leave, OR
    - paid until your last day of work, plus payment for any outstanding holidays, OR
    - paid until your last day of work, less payment for any holidays you have taken which take you over your entitlement until your leave date.

  • Only because you are choosing to leave a gap in your employment, it's still nothing to do with what day you get paid.

If your new job starts on the 28th, why are you handing in notice early? Hand in your notice so that your current employment ends on 27th October, so no gap. You don't have to finish jobs on a Friday or on a payday.

This is where Im confused - in order to hand in my notice to leave on the 27th I need to hand it on on the 28th this month and then I would be paid for 20 days?

How do you work out your daily salary for the leaving amount - is it your monthly salary divided by 20 working days for an average month or would it be my monthly salary divided by the exact number of days I will have worked that month?

Is this all being made a bit over complicated? Why not just hand your notice in in good time to meet your contractual notice period and then just let your employer worry about what you'll be paid?

only because money is rather tight as I live on my own so I need to be prepared for what the shortfall is
