I wouldn't have even had sufficient funds to pay even the minimum repayment.

The problem was a sucky set up of statement and deadline dates. They did not coincide well with my salary.

    hi zudecke

surely the late fee is because your payment reached them on 24th and it was due on 23rd?

Seems strange that charges that appeared late on the statement would crete a late payment fee as you are under no obligation to pay full balance ?

The problem is that you paid your Capital One bill late, and has nothing to do with additional purchases you made later.

    From your original post:

"my payment due date is the 23rd"

    and

    "24 Sep 2011 25 Sep 2011 PAYMENT RECEIVED £573.46"

Payment was due on or before 23rd. You paid on the 24th and the payment didn't hit your Capital One account until the 25th.

A direct debit would have helped because you might no be able to work out what to pay and when to pay it, but Capital One will and take it from your bank account automatically.

we were both posting at once lol

Right, so the late fee was because I didn't pay at least the min repayment by 23rd? Not because I had 3 late charges incur after I paid the balance?

Correct. You've got to always pay by the due date.

yes as others have said the money has to reach your account before the 23rd.

  • I found Capital One quite reasonable, actually.....have had a cc with them for over 10 years and one day, missed a payment date inexplicably by a few days - I paid immediately on realising and phoned them, was quite honest about it being a mistake and asking if the late fee could be reversed this time and not listed as being late in the CRA report - they said they could see the account had been impeccably handled over 10 years and would reverse the late fee and no CRA adverse report would be made - got a letter about this a few days later, and true to their word, they did what they said they would. It was discretionary and apparently only give one such chance.

So they're not all miserable nits, they didn't have to do this - I made a mistake, rectified it and asked politely if they would reverse the fee / not make a CRA late payment report.

Try it, it may actually work for you too!
