Junk Mail Letters - Loans, Credit Cards

Hi.

My son is getting loan and credit card adverts as junk mail, however he's only 13 years old!! I don't know where the firms have got his details from and when I question them about it they are clueless to where their mailing lists originate from. As I said he's only 13 years old and all this junk mail is addressed to him. Some of the mail includes big firms like citifinancial.

Has anyone any idea to how I can stop this?
Is there a service such as the telephone preference service for mail?

Thanks.

I reckon you should let him apply for everything, spend the lot and see what happens when they realise. :D

    (Not really, that's a rubbish idea.) :p
If you lend someone a tenner and never see them again, it was probably worth it.

Anyone can go on the mail preference service

The "problem" is that there are many times that you give out your name and address without your DoB (plus being realistic, he may well have lied about his age at some point). Lists of details get sold and resold and therefore a company buying the list may have not definitively know the ages of the people on it even if they have asked their marketing agencies to obtain "relevant" cold customer data for them to send DM to

Could be worse. My son once got some free samples of sanitary pads :rotfl:

Luckily I'd picked the post up and removed the letter before he saw it and asked awkward questions!
Here I go again on my own....

According to the Data Protection Act any company who holds your data is required to provide you with inforamtion about where they got it from. They should not divulge this to you, but if your son calls them they are obliged to reveal their sources. It may be that he has managed to get his name on the list of a company who sells data to others - if this is the case then they are also obliged to remove his name from their database.

You can check it out at

where there is all the information about the Act (in legalese) and if you quote it to anyone in a call centre they perk up pretty sharpish!!

You can register with the Mailing preference service online also, this is how I have done it. It wont eradicate it but after a few months it may help a little...
