Bought car on ebay - different colour etc

Bought a car on ebay without going to see it first (yes, not clever).

Seller (an apparently innocent young girl) kept trying to get me to pay by paypal in advance but I declined. Anyway, on Saturday they asked me to pick up the car from a garage rather than a home address (some story about it being kept there in friends garage because it wasnt insured).

Turned up - car was a complete mess. Colour was different from the ebay photos and it was obvious the ebay photos had been doctored. Also, it was advertised as with AC and didnt have it. So I told the seller to stuff it.

As I was leaving I saw the seller go back and talk to the garage owner.

I smell a rat here. I think the garage were using this young girl to sell me a dog hence the insistence on paying up front.

Problem I have now is I sorted out insurance and its £50 to cancel now. Tell you what next time I'll drive it home uninsured.

Can I report this sort of thing to ebay? I've left her negative feedback but shes re-listed the car. Hopefully, I'll be able to save some other poor mug from getting caught here.

Did you run a HPI check? If so did it show any damage cat c/d etc. This would explain the colour being out/different. Nothing you can do really other than chalk it up to experience and view next time before buying/arranging insurance. I've sold numerous vehicles on ebay, lots of them have been bought "unseen" but I have very high feedback count and loads of positives for past vehicle sales so people know i sell as described, if anything I'm over critical. What was this sellers feedback like?

Yes. I did and it came up OK at least.

But the car was a complete mess. Really battered. And it didnt have AC even though it was advertised as such and I asked her to confirm (she said she thought it did- yeah right).

Beginning to see now why she tried to get me to pay by paypal up front rather than cash on delivery - would have been hassle for me to get a refund when I turned up and saw the state it was in.

I've sold a few cars on ebay and each time have probably been too honest and highlighted even the smallest scratch. This young lady seems to have done the opposite....

To be honest, I think its been a back street garage runaround and they're trying to sell it without being associated.

The seller had a low feedback of under 10 but no negatives. She has got a negative now!
  • If she is savvy, she will be able to get the feedback removed, as you haven't paid.

Not that I am encouraging it but then the OP could also be "savvy" and mark the item as paid. As it's a vehicle it's excluded from mandatory paypal as a method of payment so could have easily been paid cash. i left a neg for a van I turned up to buy that was a turd described as a ferrari, from someone with a good track record so assumed his descriptions were honest. He tried getting it removed and also NPB'd me but after speaking with ebay I didnt get a strike and the feeback was not removed as it was factual and my opinion of the transaction
  • Thats helpful to know.
  • Marked as paid. But I was wondering if there was anything I could do to flag this to ebay before she does?

As mentioned, Mark it down as paid and leave feedback saying it was a wreck of a car.
Not as described, Not the same car as the photo's.

    Any chance of a link?
  • To be honest, u'r lucky you only lost £50.., as u already know, never ever bid on a car without seeing it first. The more I was pushed to pay on paypal without seeing, the more I'd be put off.

However, I would suggest calling ebay and advising them the car is not as advertised and has been re-listed.

    The ebay no. is
