Carer help for my Mum - Finally!!

Hi all, I hope you all can point me in the right directon :money:

My mum has finally!! agreed she needs help. She is partially paralised and nerve damage on her left side as well as loss of sensation down her spine. She can no-longer lift her arms above her shoulders which leaves her unable to wash her hair etc. My step-dad helps in the morning etc to help mum into the shower and other bits but I have been trying to get them to realise they need help.

My mum also suffers from a medium form of agrophobia and she cannot go out without someone with her incase of panic attacks (which can cause her to collapse).

Now I dont know where to go to get them help. My mum gets carers allowance which my sister was getting when she lived at home, but now she has moved out they need some help soon.

Can anyone recommend where we need to start looking? Is there a charity? Agency? Does the disability support service from the government suggest or say who has to do it? Sorry to ask all these questions but I am stuck.

My mum lives in Milton Keynes.

Thanks Cookiee x:)

  • contact your local social services and ask that they send an occupational therapist to see her, they will assess what help she needs and how/if they can supply that help

Even if they are not able to supply anyone themselves (depends on your mum's financial circumstances), they should be able to point you in the direction of suitable agencies once any assessments have been carried out.

Agree that social services are the place to contact. They will assess her needs and then her financial ability to pay for it.

When you say your mum gets carers allowance I presume you mean DLA, if at medium or high care someone can claim carer's allowance if not earning more than £105 per week and looking after her for over 35 hours a week.

  • As others say, ask social services for an adult care assessment. They will assess care needs and also financial assessment to see how much you have to contribute. If they can help they can either arrange care for you or use direct payments so you can employ a private carer or a care agency yourself. They have a list of care agencies. In my locality the social services website has a searchable list.

An OT might also be able to suggest aids and adaptations to make life for your mum easier.
