Hi all,
I know this has probably been asked before but ...
we recently moved into a 2 bedroom flat.
all electricity no gas. Economy 7 . NO TIMER
we both leave the house 7.35am and return approx 5pm.
when we come home we both want showers ,,,so we have to put the immersion on for hour or so ..otherwise cold showers!
anyway i noticed that even after an hour and half the shower was still going cold towards the end of shower number one:mad: ( approx 5 mins with hair washing etc)
so this weekend we decided to leave the immersion on 24 7 and its so nice to be able to jump in the shower when we want however we are obviously worried about the costs......
a woman in work says ' leave it on 24 7 its cheaper:o than switching it on and off all the time ' however im really worried we will have a massive bill if we do this?
can anyone shed some light on this... because we dont have a timer and economy 7 starts and ends whilst we are asleep ( usually asleep by 11.30pm:o) we dont know what to do for the best??
if we were to put the immersion on before bed and turn off when we get up - so very little peak time-would the water still be hot at 6pm after being switched off at 7am?
so sorry for all the questions just hope someone can help.
Thank you!

Running a immersion on peak rate E7 is extremely expensive-you'll pay about 4 times the cheap rate price. Get a timer fitted ASAP.
A well lagged tank will keep warm for hours.
However, the system should have a boost switch so that you can top it up if it runs cold-but it will cost you if you do that often.
Regardless of how it's wired, leaving it on 24/7 is very bad advice indeed and will prove very expensive. The whole point of an E7 wired immersion is to heat it during the cheap rate night hours. No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -

Are you renting or owners?
Do you know how many heating elements the hot water cylinder has and if more than one how the (main) lower element is connected? It's difficult to give meaningful advice without knowing the answer.
And regardless, as already suggested, good cylinder insulation is essential.0 -

Yes, the question has been asked before and the answer is simple.
The immersion is simply a huge kettle.
If you boil the kettle at 7am in the morning, would you still expect the water to be as hot when you get home at night?
Do you boil the kettle only as you need the hot water, or keep it on the boil to save money???"Now to trolling as a concept. ....
