Play.com - hacked accounts.

Hi guys, just wanted to give a heads up about the increasingly popular alternative to amazon.

DON'T keep your credit/debit cards on file on your account, as the site is now gaining a reputation for having customer's accounts hacked into.

It happened to me and I didn't realise until I tried to log in - my email address had been changed.

Unfortunately someone had hacked into my account, changed my email to theirs and ordered a couple of quids worth of stuff to test the waters.

Luckily for me I discovered this a few hours after it happened and stopped the card.

According to my bank this is happening a lot with this site.

If you want to carry on using the site, you need to delete your card's details immediately after each transaction.

I've used them loads in the last couple of years and never had any problems. They were hacked a few months ago weren't they ?

Yes they were, seems as though it's happening again. :(

I thought the hack a few months ago was of the email/marketing list, held by a specialist third party company? (a whole host of companies were affected).

No financial details were leaked, just names/email addresses?

Most "hacks" of online retailers (and game accounts etc) I see tend to be due to the use of webmail and the like with poor security on those accounts - once someone has access to your gmail account for example they can often easily find which retailers you've used (if linked to the account), the password resets etc, or the use of the same email address and password for multiple services.
It's one of the reasons I never use the same password for any two sites or services, and tend not to use any webmail service for my registered address when it comes to online stores.

Have you TRIED deleting your card details? You can't.

There was a MASSIVE thread about this on here a year or so back. Loads of people were having problems. The problem is that you can't take your card details off or change them to a nonsense number as Play will just block your account.

You cannot close a Play.com account online. You have to ring them up. Good advice about not using the same password with different retailers.
