council tax on flat

hi dont know if this is the right place to post, just a quick one im buying a flat and wondered if the council tax would be less than normal as it is a flat or is CT solely based on value of the property. also can you claim single person discount if one person lives there perm and another lives there about four days of the month. thanks

From my understanding council Tax is worked out on the value of the property. the type of property has no bearing. The person who doesn't stay there full time presumably lives somewhere else the rest of the time so would call that their main place of residence and that would be where they would count for concil Tax. Hope that helps

no the person who will only be living there for four days of the month would be staying in hotels the rest of the time as they work in london and the flat is in cheshire. so i guess this means we will have to pay the full amount, am i right?

You will have to claim on an official form for the single person discount. You will have to sign the declaration that you are telling the truth. If the council decides that you are a two person flat, then you should probably ask him if he would consider paying the extra 25%.
    Good luck!!

so basic we tell the council that he only stays there for four days out of the month and they decide if we pay full or not, is this correct?
    thanks for all your answers

I would say he visits NOT stays. They may ask where his principal residence is- e.g. what address does he use for Income tax, bank statements, visa bills, driving license etc.
