I imagine there would be a genuine defence in the event of a life or death emergency, but not if the driver became randomly ill to drive and just needed someone to get the car and passengers home.

. . . and if it is ultimately a matter of life and death that's why we have ambulances and paramedics on motorbikes. And if it's not life and death then there are Taxi's.

I must admit I've been in the life and death situation and the consequences of my actions didn't even enter the equation and if I'd been caught I'd have happily accepted the punishment as I knew the risks I was taking at the time. Although mine was not an insurance issue, more a speeding issue.

The courts will decide whether or not the reason is good enough.

Isn't this just the scenario that 'driving other car benefits' are intended for?

Not sure if they still do, but saga had a wording that covered any driver in the event of a medical emergency to the named drivers

Well........it's not what 'driving other car benefits' are "intended" for, but would cover this scenario!

yep, but then the question doesn't arise because insurance is in place.

I understand that technically an insurance policy on a car covers ANY driver in a genuine emergency
