CVs and references

What's the deal with references and CVs? After reading through a lot of CV writing advice, I still can't make up my mind if there is a consensus about references being listed on CVs or simply leaving them as 'provided on request' and kept on a separate sheet.
I'm thinking about applying elsewhere but am wary of putting my current employer as a referee. I know that it is customary for them not to be asked in this circumstance but in that case do I need to list them at all?

I used to list them on my cv until the careers person pointed out to me it wasn't neccesary because if references were needed then you would be asked for them. I have references available on request on my cv.

Ive said before that i was told to remove them (by the careers advisor at college) as it was data protection as you couldnt control how they are used as agrinnall says.

    Any decent firm

I would not put references on a CV, mine has a line at the end to say that references are available in request. If you do put them on then you have no control over how they are used.

I put a 'references available on request' line on my CV - that's pretty standard. No point giving the info before it's needed.

I must say I don't even put available on request, I take that to be assumed. If asked in an ad I will provide them in a cover letter or on an application form, otherwise they can ask and I will provide.

I agree, it is unnecessary to even mention them, (unless filling out local auth job app form) at offer stage, they will be requested if an offer is imminent

And I don't accept CV's so it doesn't matter what you put on it!
  • I have the misfortune of reviewing probably 20 CVs a month on average and have to say I haven't seen a single one that has any comments on references.

Back in my days in call centres you would occasionally get CVs with them on, or a statement to say they were available, but both served no purpose at all as those who we wanted to reference would be explicitly asked for their references irrespective of what they had written on their CV

References aren't needed or indeed appropriate on CVs. You will need to put them on application forms but it is rare for them to be taken up before an offer of work.

Mine says 'references available on request', but to be honest it's only really there to fill in dead space at the bottom.

You don't even have to mention it. If they progress your application they will ask for them at/after interview.
