The case was about filing the tax return on time and getting fined... He lost because there was no evidence what was in the letter the tax office received...
when was this as for several years now a tax return can only be submitted online as they do not sent out paper returns anymore0 -

They still send the paper version out each year if you don't do it online. I have some relatives who still live in the stone age and do it this way
No the dont sent out any VAT returns in paper form. i should know as my last return online was made 12 months ago and since then their system will not allow me to login to submit anymore and they wont send send out paper returns.
this is currently with the HMRC complaints department. i make regular visits to my local tax office and many calls and still they drag their feet.
i preferred the paper returns
http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/vatFrom 1 April 2010, you must submit your VAT Returns online and pay any VAT due electronically if either of the following applies:- you registered for VAT before 1 April 2010 and had an annual VAT-exclusive turnover of £100,000 or more for the 12 months ended 31 December 2009
- you registered for VAT on or after 1 April 2010 (regardless of your turnover)

Including you.
These goods was not sent to op and are therefore not unsolicited goods.
Obviously, we don't know enough about the company sending the parcel to make a judgment either way, but they sent a parcel to a correct address, but an incorrect name. So far, so good. But sending the invoice to The Householder implies to me that they knew full well that the name was incorrect at the time of sending. If that's the case, then yes, the goods are unsolicited.
The OP will probably have a better idea of whether they are likely to be or not, but it's certainly worth being aware of the legislation surrounding unsolicited goods.0 -

I don't think MoreOn is talking about the vat returns, their tax return ie for income tax/NI purposes.
Even if they was talking about the vat return, they still do send out returns by post -- infact your post confirms they do, depending on the date registered and turnover0 -
