BLU RAY (LG) slight judder on panning-any ideas?

Hello,

I have a brand new LG BUL RAY player (BD555) linked to my Toshiba SL738B full HD TV.

Played a BLU-RAY yesterday-noticed on 'panning' shots a v. slight 'judder'. Tv set for 'cinema' (adjusts 24 24fps i think) mode on 'advanced' settings ( http://www.toshiba-om.net/LCD/PDF/English/Country_Specific/SL738-1922263242-English-Specific.pdf page 33).

On BLU-RAY resolution is set to 'auto'.

I've read somewhere that you should just let the BLU RAY do its work & by further setting the TV up to adjust frame rates it can make matters worse?

Also..in that case-IF BLU RAY player can make disc play at 24 fps then when on earth would you need the cinema mode in the advanced setting on the TV?

Certainly not enough at all to stop enjoyment of BLU RAY but noticeable on panning shots never the less.

Any ideas from you kind & knowledgable folk?

have you got the latest firmware installed ?
  • It could well be double imaging which is normal at 24 fps.
    Have a read of http://www.avforums.com/forums/10362683-post684.html
It is explained there far better than I could ever manage.

    Thanks all for your help!

Ok...last nigt I had a fiddle with settings on BLU RAY & TV...!

Turned advanced cinema setting OFF on TV. On settings for BLU RAY I turned resolution from 50HZ to 24HZ. Also 'auto' format to '1080p' (my TV'S definition).

Tested it on Casino Royales credits which were slightly 'jerky' & all fixed now-no judder at all!

If anyone else has anthing to add that'd be great-trying to 'gen-up' on how this all works!.

    A further 3) questions...

1)-To play downloaded films via USB-best to change settings to 50HZ on BLU-RAY-also do I leave 1080p as resolution?

2)-The 'cinema' mode on the HD TV-what an earth is this used for then???!

3)-Playing STANDARD DVD'S (this player does a great job of upscaling)-leave resolution at 1080p & HZ at 24-or change to 50hz?

Thanks again! Andrew-will have a read of the link you sent-thanks!

Just so you know some of the underpinnings, movies are typically shot at 24 frames/sec on 35mm film (or pseudo-24fps digitally) - this is a historic bodge of a figure, the 'ideal' is ~50fps, but that means over 3' of film through the projector every second, making failures common. The bodge is to shoot 24 frames, then show each frame twice (pseudo-48fps) in the cinema (some have even tried 3-times, pseudo-72fps). Cinemas also have dim (but not pitch black) lighting, at just the sweet-spot to reduce the flicker effect.

This means in a panning shot, the 'true' images do flicker as you pan as they effectively jump between still photos. A good cinematographer would not pan fast to minimise precisely this, but 'cinematographer' is a diluted term now! Everything to smooth the playback for domestic TV's etc is a bodge on top of the 24fps bodge!

    1) USB is irrelevant. Films you download could be in umpteen different formats, you need to try to match everything, BUT for blu-ray, as paddyrg has helpfully stated, the film was shot at 24frames per second, so you should set your player and TV both to 24fps. Any change there can introduce the judder you saw. Leave 1080p as the resolution.
    2) Dunno, it'll be in the manual. If it's in amongst stuff like 'dynamic, normal, game' then it'll be a set of default brightness, contrast, colour and other settings.
    3) Yes, let the player upscale, leave the resolution at 1080p. 50Hz is likely better - I'm not sure there's such a thing as 24fps DVD, you may introduce judder by making the devices convert. Check the back of the DVD box for info.

Allmillar....thanks! The tv setting for 24fps ( cinema mode-not in with dynamic etc but in advanced) was OFF when i noticed the improvement as posted earlier.

Below is from the TOSHIBA manual about the 'cinema' setting. My logic says that if the BLU RAY player is set to 24HZ-there's no need to alter tv setting??? Or...have i got that completely wrong (!).

    Cinema Mode
The frame rate of a movie film is generally 24
frames a second whereas the movie software
such as DVD, etc. that you enjoy watching on
television at home is 30 or 25 frames a second.
The difference in frame rate may cause flickers
whilst viewing the films on television; set the
Cinema Mode to convert the signal to reproduce
a smooth motion and picture quality

You SHOULD have BOTH the Blu Ray and TV set to 24 FPS. That way the player literally reads 24 still pictures every second from the disc, the way they're stored, transmits them to the TV, and they're output, all in a row, exactly how they're meant to be with no conversion - just they way they look in the cinema.
The instructions in your manual basically state that you should set it (and TV) for 24FPS when watching a Blu-Ray) but for 50Hz for EVERYTHING else.
Cinema mode on your TV seems to be a setting to try to smooth out DVDs and make motion better on them, and more cinema like. This should be off for Blu-Ray, and it's down to your preference for everything else. If you think stuff looks better (especially motion) it might be useful, if you don't see a difference, leave it off.

Thanks Allmillar....sorry to be thick (!).

So...the ADVANCED cinema mode (NOT the movie setting for contrast, colour etc)-on TV (as copied & pasted in blue in above post) shoiuld be OFF for BLU-RAY & ON for DVDS.

Also on BLU RAY player set to 50hz for DVDS/downloads/24hz BLU-RAY-correct?

    Sorry....I am thick (!)

Edit Edit.....sorry allimar so the ADVANCED cinema mode-is to smooth STANDARD DVD'S-off for blu ray as lg player ALREADY set to 24hz?
