Fitting skirting board but big gap to fill.

Quite a while ago we had some work done in the dining room which involved plastering the wall. We are now ready to paint the wall and fix on new skirting board but the plaster stops about 4 inches from the floor. This means there is a void and so nothing to nail/screw into or use 'no-nails' to fix it.
Can anyone please suggest a way to fill the gap? Thanks in advance!
(I'll try to upload a photo soon)

buy a battens of wood the right depth & screw them to the wall & tack the skirting to that. Not Again0

I've taken old skirting boards off before now to find blocks of wood fixed to the wall behind, to which the skirting boards themselves have been fixed.0

No, he was the brother of someone I work with. The plaster has a nice smooth surface but the edges and corners needed sorting which I did, it's just this big gap.
I've got some batons of wood in the garage so I'll give it a go. Thanks.DEBT FREE BY 60Starting Debt 21st August 2019 = £11,024
