Changing electricity meters
Hi, Looking for some advice. Currently we have a pre-payment meter with Eon. We're not sure yet if we want to change meters. What we are looking for though is to reduce our bills. Do they(Eon) charge to change to a credit meter? If we change meters do we have to stay with them? I notice that SP are cheapest for pre-payment on Uswitch. If we changed supplier to SP, will they charge for changing the meter in the future? BG although not the cheapest, apparently change the meter for free. Is this still the case? If we change to BG will they make us stay for a set period. Or once we've joined and changed our meter can we then change supplier to the cheapest option. Thank you in advance for any informed advice.

Your best bet is to call each supplier and find out. Each supplier has their own rules.
It's not as simple as whether or not a supplier charges.
Whilst you will not have to remain with the supplier after the change, the supplier may insist on you being with them a period of time before they will even consider a change to a credit meter. (depends on your status) Others may expect you to pass a credit check, and only those who pass will get a credit meter. Others may demand several hundred pounds security deposit."Now to trolling as a concept. .... Personally, I've always found it a little sad that people choose to spend such a large proportion of their lives in this way but they do, and we have to deal with it." - MSE Forum Manager 6th July 20100 -
Hi Mathev
We’ll certainly look at changing your meters for you, here’s some details of what we look for:
You need to have been with us for at least 12 months, but we won’t tie you in after the meters have been changed. (Unless you switch to one of our contracted price plans).
We’ll perform a credit check and there’s a charge of around £50.00 per meter to get them changed.
Once we’ve fitted your new credit meters we’ll ask you to pay by monthly Direct Debit and the extra discount you receive might help you get those bills down.
We won’t normally remove prepayment meters if they’ve been fitted to recover a previous debt.
Hope this helps Mathev, let me know if you need any more info.
