Ipod touch insurance

Options
Have bought my 19yr old daughter the latest ipod touch for Christmas.

She doesn't live with me (so home insurance is out) and I want to insure it for her for both accidental damage AND theft.

Does anyone have any suggestions where I could get a decent deal on individual insurance for this?

Incidentally, am a Which member and rang them for the first time yesterday to ask the same question. The girl on the phone hadn't got a clue!

Many Thanks :)

It's normal for the person who owns something to insure it (it will belong to her so she has the insurable interest in it). Does she have home insurance?

Amazon sells Square Deal insurance for individual items, at a fairly reasonable price, which includes accidental damage. You have to buy the insurance within a certain period of buying the item (I think it is 30 days, but best check on that).

If the item was bought through amazon you simply forward the e-mailed notification as proof of purchase, otherwise you post in the receipt.

I have purchased this insurance a couple of times, and the one time I had a query (not a claim) they responded by email the same day.

    hope this helps

Edit - sorry just re-read OP - this insurance wouldn't cover loss or theft.

  • There is gadget insurance out there but it is dubious how worth while they are given (1) the cost -v- value of item (2) the excess and (3) the volume of complaints from people over claims being rejected for having not shown sufficient care.

I'm with II on this one. There are loads of complaints on the net about insurance companies not paying out. With the value being around £300 for the top of the range I personally wouldn't bother.

Any insurance is likely to have an excess and restrictions on the theft cover so that versus premium makes it uneconomical. You could always self insure and tuck some money away each month towards the cost of repair/replacement.
  • No, but her Mum does. However Mum has asked me to insure it separately as she doesn't think this will be good enough to cover it comprehensibly for loss, theft and damage - and reading the other reports on here I suspect she may be right. But thanks for your kind input.

This sounds like wise advice. I looked at gadget insurance and decided it was probably a waste of money. To be fair to insurance companies, teenagers and expensive mobile kit is an exceedingly dodgy area where they are not going to make money. Accidental damage and theft is probably a step too far for most of them. Thanks for your input.

Hmm. Self-insure. Been doing that since she could walk. Looks like this is a non-starter. Input appreciated.
