Cancelling car insurance within 14 days

Options
Arranged insurance for a car I was buying on ebay.

To cut a long story short, sale fell through. Seller had completely mis-described car, it didnt have the features advertised etc so I refused to continue with the sale.

Anyway, I find out now that Swinton want £50 admin fee to cancel the insurance. I always thought it was free to cancel within 14 day cooling off anyway? (assuming you havent claimed)

Urban myth I'm afraid. You can be charged during the cancellation period. However, it can be no more than an administration charge and time on cover.

Yeh. Time on cover would be 2 days I guess then. 2/365?

Admin charge of £50 seems a bit steep mind...

To be honest, I might keep it then change to another car when I buy one hopefully in the next few weeks. Its £15 a month.

Although I guess there'll be another admin charge there to change car details?

Admin charge for changing car can be expected!

And there's always the possibility you still have to cancel the policy if they won't cover the new car on it!

Yeh forgot about that. Hopefulyl it will be same model of car so should be ok there.
  • Just wondered. Not signed the credit agreement yet - just paid the deposit of £15.

How do I stand legally if I dont sign the credit agreement? Is this like rejecting the credit?

Or are they still going to come chasing me for the full amount if I do this?

The cancellation fee will be payable irrespective of whether the policy has been paid in full/paid by way of credit etc.
