if thats all it says then it's not a re-writer it would be a read only drive.
Tell your company to give you new pc lol

    Too right!

Thank you to everyone for all your help - at least I can stop faffing about with it for now!

"Have a look at the DVD drive in device manager"

    To do what I suggested,

    right click on my computer
    then click on manage
then click on device manager (this will list all the hardware in your PC)
click on the + sign next to DVD/CD ROM drives

It will then tell you the model name of your DVD drive, we could then check via google if it is a rewriter or read only, but from what you've said so far it doesn't sound good.

I would ask you IT department to upgrade it with a rewriter so yo can backup all your important work files.

If they won't put one in you culd always get a USB pen drive to put your photos on, or an external hard drive.
It's my problem, it's my problem
If I feel the need to hide
And it's my problem if I have no friends
And feel I want to die

I have done as you suggested and come up with this number:

    HL-DT-ST DVD-ROM GDR 8163B

I googled it and I think you are right in that it is read only.

In the meantime I have spoken to my IT people without sounding too ingnorant (thanks to all the help on here) and although they denied at first thay I could have been given a PC without a CD burner - I was able to explain what I had done to verify that this was the case. They have agreed to come out and install one.

Thanks again for all your help - only wish I could buy you all a drink!
