benefit help

Can anyone help me,
My husband and i have 4 kids,
ages range from 8, 7, 4, 4
My question is my husband will now be working part-time 20hrs, and i have my hands full looking after our kids.
what benefits will we be entitled to as a couple and what family tax credit amount are we likely to get.
I understand that working familys tax credit will change next year , so , how will this impact on us.

please can anyone out there help me with this query.

I don't know the answers here but you need to put your husband's earnings as well, as that will determine what you may be entitled too.
Tomorrow is always fresh, with no mistakes in it!

Depending on your OH's income, you will be able to claim working and child tax credits.

Child benefit will remain the same.

Housing benefit depends on earnings too.

Do you claim tax credits now?

The change which will affect you is that you won't be able to get WTC next year - as a couple need to work 24 hours. And you'll lose the 30 hour element this year when his hours drop below 30.

If his earnings are below £16,000 then you'll get about £14,000 in CTC and child benefit.

If his earnings are above £16k then appoximately you'll get £410 less in CTC for every £1000 over.

If you're renting you'll almost certainly be entitled to housing benefit/LHA as well. You may get council tax benefit too, and free school meals.

In my opinion you should also be given a grant to cover the 'home education'. You should be receiving the equivalent of what it costs the government to educate a child through a school.

But no, there is no chance of that happening.

If I was you I would be using the various calculators, Tax Credit, etc and make sure you claim every cent you are entitled to.

Why not contact the Education Dept of your council and ask them about grants to allow home education.

There is no grants for home-ed as its a 'choice', but some councils will fund college places for older children.

Thanx all for your replies, it's been an eye opener to say the least.
    My husbands salary will drop to about 17,500 p.a ( 20 hrs/week).
My main concern is if we dont get WTC and since we are home educating cant get CTC, how will we manage.
is it definite that as a couple one of you has to work min 24 hrs, and when will this get inforced.
also on my husbands salary will we get housing benefit if we rent from the council.
I dont understand do i still get child tax credit if i am home schooling.
all this is extremely confusing to me.

On £17500 working part time you wouldn't get any WTC anyway. So the rule change makes no difference in your case.

Yes you will get CTC, home schooling makes no difference to that. Total CTC & CHB should be over £13000. And you should get housing benefit, probably council tax benefit too. I think you'll be just over the limit for free school meals and presciptions.

"At the moment, if you're responsible for at least one child and working at least 16 hours a week, you can get Working Tax Credit.
From 6 April 2012, the rules for couples with at least one child are changing. In most cases, to qualify for Working Tax Credit your joint working hours will need to be at least 24 a week.
    This will mean:
    • if you both work your joint weekly hours must be at least 24, with one of you working at least 16 hours a week
    • if only one of you works, that person must be working at least 24 hours a week"

thanx all v much, i really love this forum, coz it's nice to have many nice pple offering free advice out of kindness.

What is the max limit or up to how much should you be earning to be eligible to claim housing benefit. so is it definite that ill get HB.

And about council tax benefit, will i be entitled to it definitely, and how should i go about it.

Also since my husbands hours will definitly change from the 20th november, how should i go about claiming all these benefits (CTC & Council Tax benefit).

And is there such a thing as a type of educational grant the local authority provides for help and support if youv'e chosen to home educate your children.

    thanx.
