have you added or removed any software ?0

This problem starts even with installation. If i install win95, 98se or win ME, then i have no problems at all. it will shutdown and restart etc like a laptop or my main pc does normally?. I have all the latest drivers from their website and have even updated the bios as well to its latest version?0

Known issue in XP. Fixed in SL1.
Work round:
In the Control Panel, click User Accounts, then click “Change the way users log on or off.” Uncheck the box that says “Use the Welcome screen.” This removes the initial logon screen with individual icons for each user and, instead, pops up the classic logon prompt that requires each user to type a user name and password.0 -

Thanks for the reply, but the issue isn`t that i can`t log off, it`s the fact that it won`t FULLY shut the laptop down, just hangs on the last screen. As i said, with 98 etc, it shut down and restarts are no problem. lol0

Not sure about Toshiba Satellites but i have come across a similar problem before on an old laptop, if the cd/dvd drive is a samsung 24 speed then it would hang on shutdown if there wasn't a disc in the drive. Weird problem i know and didn't find a fix for the issue either just had to leave a disc in, as i say don't know if this is relevant at all to you but maybe worth a crack
