Getting Distemper off Lathe and Plaster walls for skimming

I wonder if you can give me any ideas on how to get the distemper of the lathe and plaster walls.

The plasterer has said I need to get the distemper off and back to the greyish white plaster in order for his skimming to stick to the walls.

It is a bit of a nightmare as I have used sugar soap and a scrubbing brush and it just moves the green coloured distemper around the wall. Any ideas?

Thanks

Apply thistle bond-it over the walls, Plaster will stick to this fine and will not blister

steamer and scraper to get most of it off then green scourer and hot water to remove the rest, as long as most of it is off it can be sealed with stabliizing solution
  • If you have lathes on your walls then distemper is possibly the least of your problems.

    Sorry couldn't help that ;)

ive found that a general clean and then scratching the surface all over, is good enough.
    for a really good key.
i use a home made scratch device. some wood with nails driven thro it.
    Get some gorm.

It is to keep the cost down. He said he can do it, but the hourly rate will push the price right up.

We had to use a pan scourer to remove the distemper from the walls and it took hours, so yes the plasterer would be getting pounds out of you. New plaster will not stick to distemper. So we scourered and then wiped of with damp cloth. This was 4 years ago and we have not had any problems with the new plastered and emulsioned walls.
Why pay full price when you may get it YS ;)
