What is causing this noise from the wheels / front of car ?

Options
Scraping noise as wheels turn. Comes on more when turning the wheels, disappears upon breaking, more evident going downhill than uphill, less so or not heard under acceleration.

Seems to be coming from both sides, though it could be centralised and heard from both sides. No pull under braking at all, new pads 5k miles ago. Front wheel drive.

Seems to have started around the time we went down a rough gravel track and it does sound a little like stone on metal. But what could have got caught and where ?

Doesn't feel strange to drive in any way, only noise and I'll take it to the garage on Monday but I'd like to think I knew what it was or at least had some idea beforehand.

Any ideas ?

  • Could well be a stone trapped between the front disc and the metal shield plate that is on the inside of it . Usually easly dislodged with a bit of stick but you will have to take the front wheels off to get a good look.

  • i've had something similar with a honda before, and it was a bad set of pads. never come across it before, but it was something in the pad material.

Jack it up and turn the wheel manually see if you can hear it i would say the backplate is either touching the disc or a stone is lodged between the two
  • Just to close this one out, I had the car serviced and unbelievably it was the brakes. They were worn down to 10% and the noise was coming from some warning scraper on the brake itself.

So whilst we now have the answer and a solution, I have have the unpleasant task of going back to the Vauxhall garage who sold it to me and basically invoicing them for a couple of hundred quid as they did not replace the pads as they stated they had prior to my collecting the car. No way can pads go from 100% to 10% in less than 5000 miles.

they could if you really hammer them. same as clutches can go in a few thousand miles if you dunno how to use them tidy
Come on, it's not rocket surgery is it?
  • Been driving for over 2 decades. Hammering an auto truck around over all ground I get about 30,000km from the pads and another car has 15k miles and is nowhere near needing another set.

At worst, if they or Vauxhall refuse to cough up, in 12 months time we send it in for another service and measure the pads. If they are also 10%, I'll stand corrected but of they are say at 75%, then I'll have my evidence, assuming similar mileage.

5000 miles is nothing for a set of pads but good luck with getting any joy from the dealers.
The garage must have seen you coming if you paid £200 for a set of pads.

I have the technicians from the main dealer who serviced it saying there is no way these could have been new 5000 miles ago.

Play one dealer off against another and let Vauxhall decide who is right seems to be one way to resolve this.

I suspect I'll get a credit to cover some future work or service, which is fine with me.

what proof have you got that the other garage 'changed' the pads? they may have checked them and deemed them to be ok.
