Help To Travel To My Dad's Funeral

Hello
Can any one give me some advice please?
My Dad died on Thursday and he lived in Cornwall and I live in Leeds. I am on benefits income support and lower rate DLA. I also get help with my rent.
I don’t have any savings and there is no one who can lend me the money to go to his funeral. I don’t have a good credit rating that I could even get a loan.
I need to go to his funeral I don’t have the money to travel down to Cornwall and I would need somewhere to stay too.
When my Mum died last October I applied to the social fund but did not get it as I was not in danger and it was not a risk to my health, so could not get it.
My Dad has left no money as he was on benefits too I need to work out how I will pay for the funeral yet!
Can any one give me some advice as the funeral date as been set for the 1st November!
Kind regards
Tigerlilly

Perhaps a credit union could help with a loan for the travel?

  • Do you have a local radio station that could broadcast a plea on your behalf perhaps to help with at least the transport?

Credit unions normally only lend to those who have saved with them first.

OP, apply for Social Fund assistance again - there is provision there for people to travel to the funerals of immediate family.

    http://uk.megabus.com/JourneyResults.aspx - Leeds to London 6 quid

    http://uk.megabus.com/JourneyResults.aspx - London to Newquay 12 quid

Both on megabus, if you can break the journey down further you might get it cheaper. It should be a similar cost when coming back too. Maybe try coachsurfing if your going for one night, or a youth hostel

As for help with the funeral http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/MoneyTaxAndBenefits/BenefitsTaxCreditsAndOtherSupport/Bereaved/DG_10018660

Sorry about your loss by the way.

Stop worrying about paying for the funeral. If your father was on benefits and you are too yu can apply for a funeral grant.

As the other poster said, apply to the social fund people.Could you stay in the house your mum was in for a little while, presumably there will be other family who you could sty with for a while.
Im sorry yu have lost both your parents.

    Good luck

Sorry for your loss, hope you are ok.
This http://www.dwp.gov.uk/advisers/claimforms/sf200_print.pdf says you can claim for one return journey and, if you are responsible for the cost, the funeral. Contact the jobcentre and explain your situation and what help you need. Ask for an appointment to visit them or I believe you can have a home visit.
  • I am so sorry to hear of your loss. You have my deepest sympathy.

I take it you have no relatives that you can approach. What about friends?

Failing that, I suggest you contact your local newspaper. They usually know of people in your area who may be able to help. Some years ago, a friend of mine who had a terminally ill child was driven to the hospital down south by a local garage which was arranged by our local newspaper.

Failing that, go and see the CAB early next week and seek their advice.

Good luck. I'm sure you will be helped. And don't worry about funeral costs. They will be taken care of by the local council if you can't afford it and Dad left no money.
