  • One thing reading this thread, is that it's interesting to see how different people think of different things as essentials or not.

For example, several people have mentioned microwaves / toasters. We don't have either, and wouldn't use them, I reckon.
...much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.

Hi Lady M! Congrats on the new home :)

definitely ask for a bed from the social fund, I know when I moved in here I was on my own with the children and moved from a hideously damp place so all my furniture was mouldy and they paid me £580... with use of ebay etc (and kindly people fetching things I won for me) I managed to kit this house out pretty well (though obviously I had things like my cooker and kettle etc) Got a job lot of bedroom furniture for £100 (2 wardrobes, 4 chests of drawers) and my bed for £70, bearing in mind it's a king size gothic style solid oak bed, and cost me less than one cheap double from argos

I got a tumble dryer for £50 from freeads, and the man selling it dropped it off for me which I wasn't expecting. It was only 18 months old too and been used a handful of times ;)

Obviously it's just you and OH so you may not need a dryer, It was me and 3 under 5's so I did. lol. I still like the airers that go on the radiators, especially now the price of electricity has rocketed.

The argos idea is a very good one, they do a kitchen pack which is washing up bowl, sink drainer, plastic bin etc and IIRC it's quire cheap.

Re: social fund - ask for absolutely everything as others have said. No one judges you and if you only ask for £50 then £50 is all you will get!

Oh and with sofas... you're better off with a good second hand one then a cheap new one especially as with mobility problems it will get a lot of use, cheap sofas from argos/littlewoods tend to fall to bits very quickly, and there are always loads of nice ones on ebay. My old 2 sofas which i got from a British Heart Foundation second hand shop when I moved in here over 4 years ago are still going strong in my brothers flat share :)

My neighbour has recently got some IKEA ones for £50 from ebay.
Mum of several with a twisted sense of humour and a laundry obsession :o:o

Must agree, a tumble dryer is not necessary - unless you have kids!! Then I think it's vital!! Many a time my son would "forget" to take his sports gear out of his bag, then suddenly announce he wanted it for the next day (this would be about 8pm the night before!!) Or my daughter would want a certain top to go out with, or "her life would be ruined"!!! rolleye.gif One of my "best buys" was a steamer, it was only 20 quid from Tescos, saves all the flaffing of pans all over the place as well - less washing up, always a bonus!!!:)
  • I have three kids...but also an aga which dries the clothes...and no teenagers yet, though we do have a teenager-in-waiting!

    Thank you. :D

We already have a decent bed though. :p

Will defo shop around for things as we need to save wherever we can.

I would like a tumble dryer, purely because I find that easier and less energy-consuming then having to actively hang things everywhere. It's not lazyness. Just that I need to conserve my energy wherever I can as I don't have alot of it.

I've been looking at those.:) Also went into Dunelm Mill today and my goodness, so many purple kitchen goods! Thankfully I was in my wheelchair so Sam just wheeled on by, otherwise I would have been there all day! :p

I guess I feel guilty, in a way. I always think that the money they give me could be given to someone much more needy.:o

Sam and I went looking at second-hand sofas today, just to see what's available.
Ideally we'd like a sofa-bed as we have friends that come and stay and for when SIL just wants time away from home and can come and stay with us for a night or two. :)

I would book your OT visit ASAP as soon as you move in LM, a good one is worth their weight in gold, a bad one gives you everything you dont need that will just clutter the place up.
