Help selling my car...new MOT?...advertise where?

  • It's a cabbies perfect car, and you'd think a private buyer with an ounce of sense would realise why cabbies want them so much and find out why, but there you go, many people need badges.

Take no notice of the geezers that tell you they have been offered the top spec lower mileage newer car than yours for a grand less, they always trot that old rubbish out, i usually tell them to get me one whilst they're at it.

You will have to barter with these fellows, but if you keep things cheerful and light hearted eventually one of them will meet you half way, they will not pay your first asking price it's not their way.

Sold my low miles Diesel Avensis some years ago, and the only people interested in that were cabbies who came hundreds of miles to see it, once you've done a deal they are usually straight with no funny business, i prefer dealing with these chaps, you know where you are.
  • When I bought the car I had heard it was a cabbies favourite and that I shouldn't therefore have any trouble selling it when the time came.

It's been economic to run and offers loads of room for the money, a genuine 5-seater with a large boot.

I've had it 3 years and now need something smaller and nimbler.

I'm re-advertising at a slightly higher price (either £3,950 or £4,000?) and then I'm ready to barter on price!

I've just come back from the park entrance which made for a lovely back-drop for some publicity pictures of the car:)
  • Thanks. I took your advice.

Last night I advertised the Avensis on Autotrader at £4,000 with some great pictures.

I removed the Gumtree advert and replaced it with a new advert with the new price and the new pictures.

The good news is that I have had two responses this morning from families who are coming to view today, having seen it on Autotrader. They asked if I would take an offer and I said I was open to reasonable offers.

I will let you know how I get on.;)

6 months MOT is reasonable. If I'm confident it'll fly through I would normally put it through an MOT so you can advertise it with 13 months MOT - Most people assume (wrongly sometimes) that this means the car is good to go and requires nothingspending on it for that time.

The OP wouldn't be able to get an MOT with 13 months on it as they still have 6 months remaining on the existing one.
It's only if you get the test done in the last 4 weeks of an MOT's validity that the new certificate can be dated to expire when the current one expires.
  • I sold my car yesterday!

The buyer wanted an HPI certificate and some fuel but didn't require a full MOT to be done. I got £3,700 and cleared £3,600 after taking off these extra costs.

So I am better off by £300 with Autotrader than by selling to the first Gumtree caller.

The buyer got a good deal too, as the HPI certificate was showing a value of £4,200.

Thanks to all for your advice.:)

This post made me laugh after reading the thread.

Congrats op. Sounds like a reasonable sale all round.
Can we just take it as read I didn't mean to offend you?
