I could never see the point of walking for the sake of it so I got a dog - if you can't have your own or don't want one you can always be a volunteer dog walker for the Cinnamon Trust or any local dogs home. They're always grateful for any help.0

I go to....
The library.
Local craft classes (usually drop in/very cheap).
Walk along the beach (pick up shells for the kids art box, or for the garden) or the local woods (look for conkers, interesting bits of fallen twigs and leaves (twigs go in jars with flowers, kids like the leaves) and brambles etc. Or go to feed the ducks in the local pond.
Walk a dog for your neighbour?
Walk to the paper shop at the other end of town rather than the local one.
Walk round the charity shops.
Local sports or events...there's quite a lot of craft fairs, farmers markets and jumble or car boot sales at this time of year.
Visit a friend week about for coffee, or start a coffee morning rota in a group.Val.0 -
I do a lot of walking especially in winter. I take my camera out with me and take pictures to pass the time, it probably helps I'm near a river and mountains for a bit of landscape photography but I suppose it could be done in a more urban setting. I love being wrapped up and treat myself to a hot chocolate when I get home.0

With Xmas coming up there might be a lot of church fayres in your area. You might get a cuppa and a nice bit of home baking for a bit less than a coffee shop. HTHI love MSE freebies and comps. Thanks posters0

I go to exhibitions all the time, a lot of them are free and it's a nice way to go out.
Cemeteries - I know this is an odd choice but some of them have guided tours that are free or inexpensive (even if it's free, I'd recommend donating £2, a lot of the tombs are cleaned and taken care of for free by the people running the tour)
Agreed re: library.
Be a tourist in your town for a day. I'm in London myself and I have a monthly Travelcard that I use at weekends to go wherever. I just hop on the tube and get off whenever the name sounds nice. Sightseeing is free as long as you stay outside.0 -
Keep an eye on UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments
There are often various day trips, events, and other free venues posted there.

...and your own thought there Squeaky - re Kindle.
I tried downloading the Kindle "reader" icon onto my computer the other day. Now THAT actually is DEAD easy and then one can read all those free Kindle books on the computer. No need to actually have a Kindle as such (though I bought one anyway - so I can carry my books round with me..).0 -
Yeah, I have it on my lap top. Not as light as a kindle, but every bit as portable. Currently doing a major "raid" on Gutenberg
Definitely free entertainment - and I don't even have to go anywhere.Hi, I'm a Board Guide on the Old Style and the Consumer Rights boards which means I'm a volunteer to help the boards run smoothly and can move and merge posts there.
