Connecting PVR to Sky box - suggestions please

Hi

I currently have a Sky box & DVD recorder and want to use a PVR to record TV rather than onto DVD's. I used to have a subscription to Sky but cancelled so I think I get the free to view channels on it rather than free to air (I get Sky 3). At the moment I don't feel the need for any more channels.

My aerial would need updating to receive any digital signal and I can't get any form of cable. I have a spare PC (800 mhz) which I think would struggle if I tried to run TV thru it. Main PC is no where near the TV.

I would prefer to use one EPG but as with all things keeping it cheap is the main criteria (over £100 and I would think twice about it!!!)

Any suggestions as to what to do ?
tks
Dave

does you aerial definitely need updating is your first check? Can you borrow a freeview box(or buy one at Asda/Tesco to check then take it back)?
  • I could borrow a box but my aerial is v. old and the reception is bad (always watch tv via the dish). And all the houses round me have had new aerials - not least because the top has to be three to four feet higher up to be able to get a signal.

BUT....if it seems the way to go then I can look into it.

You cannot record Sky onto a freeview PVR. Such PVRs record the DTT digital stream and decode it when it is being replayed. There is no PVR available (that I'm aware of) which can record from an external source I'm afraid.

  • I have done this using a Hauppauge 150 card and the Media Portal software. Although this does mean that you will need the PC near the tv ( hence if the PC is noisy then it is all a waste of time ! ) . I have a shuttle machine that has acceptable levels of noise.

    The setup is.

Sky Normal output --> TV Scart 1
Sky Video Output Scart --> Hauupauge 150 ( component in )
Graphics Card --> TV Scart 2 ( for Viewing )
Sound is via PC's optical connection to my AV amp.

    Cheers,
