Is there a setting in Hotmail to do this?

Before I ask my question I'd like to say I have googled for an answer but not sure I was using the right search terms as I didn't find a definate answer
I use Hotmail and yesterday I ticked the checkboxes of a few emails at once to delete them, hit delete but pc was on a go slow so my impatience made me hit delete again. All at once the mails I wanted to delete disappeared but so did another email I wanted to keep.
In my deleted items folder I hit the recovery button and got it back so no harm done.
My question is, is there a setting I can change so that emails have to have their checkboxes ticked before it will allow me to delete them? It seems that just having them highlighted will delete them when the delete button is hit but I'd like to have to actually check the box.
Thanks

I use hotmail and have never heard of it deleting things unless I have them ticked first, infact getting hotmail to delete anything is enough of a hassel (the sheer amount of times I've tried to delete and then the page refreshes--but doesn't load, I go to look a the junk folder or read a message or put another into a folder and the inbox suddenly gains all its messages again!!) I since moved to gmail but still use hotmail for some emails- the errors it has are getting worse so as much as I'd say what you experienced cannot happen it wouldn't suprize me if its yet another hotmail technical error! Use with caution!!0

the checkbox above all the delete`s highlights all the delete`s for deleting,0

I've done that many times - hit the delete button twice - but second time around always get the message
You need to select at least one message before you can do this. ...
I've never been able to delete any without first selecting or opening it.0 -
a simple idea might be to create a 'folder' for important emails and moving the emails when they land in your inbox, i have seperate folders for travel, house bills, online purchases etc
that way your less likely to delete, and organised filing0 -
Ok, so judging by replies it seems there isn't the setting available that I want.

To make sure I wasn't imagining it I moved a few emails from my deleted folder back to my inbox. I ticked the checkbox on the first few and hit delete, they deleted as expected. Once they had gone the next email was automatically highlighted and I could read it. I hit delete again and as the email was highlighted it disappeared. The only was to un-highlight the email was to click on inbox.
whatyadoinsucka. I do have folders set up and usually move emails I want to keep as soon as I have read them. I hadn't moved the one that I lost and recovered immediately as I wanted to leave it in my inbox as a reminder to use the info it contained.:heart2: Love isn't finding someone you can live with. The only way I can find to make hotmail behave as you describe is to have "reading pane" switched on. I couldn't put up with it like that. Very annoying!
With it off only highlighted emails are deleted. A second delete command gives the "you can't do that" message
Reading pane settings are in the reading email section of more options0 -
If you're not using the reading pane, it'll only by highlighted when you've got the box ticked.0

Thanks Andrew and s_g, that's exactly the info I was looking for! :T
Have now turned off the reading pane and it doesn't delete without me ticking the checkbox.:heart2: Love isn't finding someone you can live with. It's finding someone you can't live without :heart2:0 -
Also, if you have the reading pane switched on and allow pop-ups, pictures and attachments to be displayed then in Junk and Scam Mail, the opening of the picture in the reading pane relays a message back to the originator that you have done so, thereby confirming to them that your email address is active so please send me even more rubbish.
If you have the reading pane on, make sure that you have pop-ups, pictures and attachments disabled.0
