Alternately does anyone know of a good dedicated techie website that might be able to help me with this?
It's either that or taking it in to PC world or the like who are gonna charge me a fortune I imagine...0 -
If you take it somewhere, you'd be better taking it to a local PC shop than PC World, IMHO
Alternatively, ask a friend to download this and burn it to CD
http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/
then boot from this CD and use one of the Hard Disk Diagnosis tools to test your hard drive and hopefully repair any errors. You could also use Testdisk that is on there, I've used that before and it's pretty good. It's my problem, it's my problem

Okay, I managed to download the above on my mums computer but when I burn it to a cd it does not open automatically, I have to go in and do it through windows which obviously I won't be able to do at home?
Can anyone suggest a way of either getting it on to a cd so that it boots up automatically, or is there another way of doing this via the boot menu or something.
Ps My pc automaically boots from the cd drive first so this is not the problem, it seems that the uboot program is compressed or something or I haven't burned it correctly to auto run or whatever.0 -
PS Previous post was from me but on my mum's computer.0

BamBam, if you look on the FAQS on the ultimatebootcd site it tells you how to burn it. It is an ISO image, if you copied it in windows it will probably have just copied the ISO image to the CD rather than creating a boot disk.
details on how to burn it here.
