Unless you qualify for BT Basic (you're on certain specified benefits), the bottom tariff is line rental with their (free) Unlimited Weekend Calls Plan.

That's currently £13.90/month but due to rise to £14.60 on 3 December 2011.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

Or there is BT's Line Rental Saver ('LRS') at £120 / year paid up front.

Requires you to make at least two BT calls per month to avoid a £1.50 monthly charge

True, but as the basic call plan is weekends, you just have to remember to make the calls at the weekend ( to an 01,02,03 number) and the call will be 'free' and the minimum call commitment is made
