I can't read anymore....Easiyo yoghurt maker help needed..

I have spent over an hour on this forum reading about making yoghurt....i have read so much advice i am completely and utterly confused....
I have managed to get hold of an Easyio yoghurt maker but i don't want to buy the expensive sachets. I have read all sorts of variations of the ingredents and i don't know whether to use skimmed/semi-skimmed or full fat uht milk or to add skimmed milk powder or not and everyone seems to use different amounts. Some people pass the yoghurt through muslin, some don't....do i warm the milk or not?....do i warm my easyio with boiling water first then pour the water away and put new boiled water in?
As you can see i am completely confused what is best to do. We all love natural yoghurt and if i can make this it will be great.
Can anyone help me with fool proof instructions on how to make natural yoghurt from scratch in my easyio yoghurt maker, without using sachets?

Buy a small pot of plain yogurt.
Add a couple of heaped tablespoons of it to the easio pot.
Add a couple of heaped tablespoons of skimmed milk powder.
Top up with milk (I use UHT skimmed because that stores longer).
Mix it all well.
Put the pot in the easio flask.
Top up with hot, boiled water. Leave in a warm place overnight.
Give it the pot a shake, then put in the fridge.
Simples
When the pot gets low (to about a couple of heaped tablespoons) re-start the process.0 -
Just to add:
~ sometimes it comes out thinner than other times. This could be due to the surrounding temperature of the room/place you stand the yogurt to mature (for example in the summer, my kitchen side is ok; during colder months, I stand it nearer to the boiler, or even put it in the airing cupboard)
~ sometimes, I have been known to use out of date (just) skimmed milk powder and the yogurt may not be as thick.
~ have never used full fat milk so can't comment
~ have never pre-heated the Easio flask, so can't comment
~ have always used heaped spoonfuls
~ even if it has come out thinner than I'd prefer, it makes a fab yogurt drink and is particularly lovely used instead of milk on cereal (in fact you can pay a lot of money to buy a "yogurt milk" specifically for drinking/pouring over cereal)
~ whether thick, thin or inbetween, it can be used: dips, cooking, sauces, drinking, pouring, etc.
~ over time (and I don't have a definitive answer for that) you will need to purchase a new "starter" pot of natural yogurt again.

I am now armed with the correct ingredients ready to start, but I have two more quick questions...do i need to heat the uht milk (i bought semi skimmed hope that will work ok)?...and....do i fill the yogurt jar right to the top or to the top 'line' on the jar?

kippers, no, you do not need to heat the UHT (semi should be ok
) the heat from the hot water in the flask is what will keep the contents of the pot at the right temperature.
You fill the yogurt jar to the "fill line" (the top line on the jar)0 -

Next i was wondering if it's possible to make a lactose free yogurt for my dd2, using the lactose free cows milk? Does anyone manage to make it lactose free?

I have no answers regarding the lactose free yogurt - not something I have any experience ofI do hope you find an answer to that particular request.
In the meantime, so thrilled for you that you were able to utilise your EasiO yogurt maker and get a result you are pleased withI know for a fact that it is a great money saver for yogurt lovers

Thanks for this post its a great help!! Does anyone know if making the yoghurt this way it will still have all the live yoghurt benefits of the different good bacteria or will that depend on what yoghurt you start with? I only ask as my husband has collitus and I want the digestive benefits for him.
Also how would you make greek just start with greek?

My first attempt has come out rather runny but i didn't have milk powder to add. i will try next batch with powder.
Any other tips on how to have thicker yoghurt would be greatly received.Andyboy :idea:0
