Leaving this thread now, apologies for anyone who inadvertently develops tooth decay due to my posts as, according to some posters in here, you will not have the smarts to think for yourself.
I have NO problem with anyone disagreeing with me at all. But rudeness and aggression disguised as debate is childish and petty. I do apologise to anyone who believes toothpaste contains sugar as 'gospel' as all I was doing was relating something which DID happen the way I said it did. That's all.

The original point was to spit don't rinse with toothpaste as it allows the fluoride to stay in contact with the teeth longer. Concern was expressed this was the wrong thing to do as tooth paste contained enormous amounts of sugar!

    "
You should spit not rinse after brushing otherwise the toothpaste doesnt sit on the teeth doing good.

When my daughter was still in school, their chemistry class analysed common brands of toothpastes. Without exception they all contained sugar (!), some in quantities which were ridiculously high. So I don't think leaving the toothpaste to sit on the teeth is entirely a good idea unless you can be sure of the sugar levels in the paste. End of quote."

If people want to verify the claims google spit dont rinse toothpaste and you get this sort of result http://www.google.co.uk/search?q=spit+dont+rinse+toothpaste&hl=en&client=safari&prmd=imvns&ei=OSelTtOxAoWG8gOAiai4Bg&start=0&sa=N&biw=320&bih=416

Everyone from nhs health promotion to individual dentists promote it.

As said before it's a common falacy promoted because of confusion over sugar which can be metabolised by plaque to destroy teeth and sugar alcohols such as xylitol etc which cannot be used by plaque bacteria to damage teeth. It is a mistake that one would hope a school chemistry teacher would not make and if it was published and distributed widely one would hope a retraction and statement of facts had been published. It would be terrible to think that peoples oral hygiene practices and beliefs could be based on a grossly flawed school science experiment . I hope red doe you all spit dont rinse now!

    Yeah you could say that!
It was entirely through my own stupidity so I'm very surprised I recieved all the sympathy that I got! Nevermind, accidents happen!
Probably not something you deal with but have you had much experience with mouths wired shut and broken jaws? I was lucky not to lose any teeth (hate going to the dentist so very glad I avoided losing any!) but where I broke my chin, the gum split down the middle which made one of my front teeth loose. It seems to have strengthened itself but my dentist said I should keep an eye on it as I could get problems with the root?!

I appreciate that I should be spitting, not rinsing, but after all these years it does not come naturally. I was always told that you rinsed to get rid of the dislodged bits of food, so should I be giving my mouth a good swoosh out with water before I clean, or will this dilute the fluoride further?
Good enough is good enough, and I am more than good enough!:j

In our area plenty of experience with fractured jaws! Any tooth that has had a big bang fractured jaw or not has the potential to die off days, weeks , months or years later and may need root treatment. So you will probably need regular xrays to keep an eye on it and the others. Also the plate placement can also traumatise tooth so will always need to keep an eye out for this reason. A tooth that changes colour, becomes looser or painful to bite on go see your dentist.

What you do in-between times up to you, rinse out with water no problems, but before you finish don't rinse out your toothbrush have a quick go round to coat teeth and spit.

I'd rather brush my teeth and not be like my dad, who has just come out of day surgery and had all of his teeth taken out cos he didn't brush.
