Getting a present not on gift list..?

Totally agree Torry - I was very concious to not be greedy & put pricy things on there.
Ifact lots of people kept saying the list was too humble & they wanted to know whether there was something more expensive we wanted!0 -
We had quite a small gift list of bedlinen, towels and cutlery. We had already got these but these were intended as luxury replacements we would not have bought ourselves. Most guests bought items of cutlery ranging from a single teaspoon to a set of steak knives. We now have a fantastic canteen of cutley that we use for best and it always reminds us of our wedding day.0

Maybe I'm just being reluctant to buy gift list stuff as I think it's so expensive for what it is (£7 for a single fork, £90 for a duvet cover!) I know they're probably luxuries they wouldn't buy themselves though, so will probably just get something from the list.Does the list have the option of adding to a gift card?
When we married last year, we'd been living together for 4 years and had 2 houses full of "stuff", but desparately needed new bedlinen for our kingsize bed, so we didn't have a list but instead suggested Thomas Cook vouchers or Debenhams gift cards....we got a honeymoon for our first anniversary AND new bedding thanks to the generosity of our guests
Maybe go for a gift card, so they can get what they weren't given, but in a design of their choice?0 -
pretty sure with any gift list, if you don't have enough of one set bought, you can just not have another item that was bought and put that money towards the set you do want.
or not have any of it and get gift vouchers to buy a bigger item at the store.
So i'd not worry about not buying a complete set of something, as it can all be sorted at the end by the couple.0 -
We've been living together for 6 years - but still needed lots of things as we'd only ever bought cheap. New kettle, toaster, microwave, chopping boards, kitchen bin, towels, bed spreads etc - and we absolutley love them all! There's no way that I'd spend £17 on a bath sheet for myself - but that's one of my favourite presents and it feels so cosy and wonderful when I get out of the shower! That's what presents should be - little luxuries!
But by all means, buy off the list - just make sure it's special. We got a bottle of wine on a lovely wooden stand with a note saying that it was from the year we met - made me cry when I opened it! I'm considering buying a personalised print for the next wedding I go to - although they've requested cash for honeymoon, so still undecided!Virtual Sealed Pot Challenge #148 - £59.93

Hi,
I agree with most of the comments here. A gift from the list will be appreciated, but I'm sure they would enjoy your gift whether it was from the list or not.
We asked for money for charity for our wedding and although most people did, there were some lovely thoughtful gifts (and some odd things) too. It was lovely to recieve gifts that we weren't expecting.
The gifts that really stand out:
Someone gave us some money to go out for a really nice candle-lit meal on our honeymoon
Someone else gave us bubblebath and chocolates, also for our honeymoon.
My closest friend hand knitted an incredibly beautiful blanket for our bed which we both love in winter.
A few others gave us very generous gifts for our wedding day such as making the cake, doing the photographs, bringing desserts (MAN those brownies were amazing!), providing the car, decorating church etc etc etc.
The things that, although appreciated, ended up in the back room or in a drawer somewhere were picture frames, stuffed toys and ornaments. I'd always thought a picture frame was a great idea for a wedding gift, but if their house is already set up, chances are that they already have a spare few frames knocking around are not going to want to put up a whole load of extra pictures - probably just one which they will chose themselves and probably won't fit in the frame gifted!
Hope you manage to come up with something special,
Wiggy xx0 -
I nearly always go for things on the list - and would have been annoyed if too many people gave us random carp that we didn't want at our wedding (only about 3 people did in the end...). That said, my sister and I went off-list for each other, as we both asked for cash, but both wanted to give the other something to keep - we gave each other a nice framed print from the pre-shoot as a gift. You'd hope your know your siblings well enough to pick something out for them that they'll genuinely like. Like I said, though, for anyone I know less well, I use the list, every time.0

I think I would definitely stick to the list. It may but boring stuff left but it's stuff they would probably really appreciate and need. If nobody got them the less exciting stuff they would have to get it themselves so it's nicer to save them the money and give them things they really want!0

We had about 10 people buy off the list.
We had 4 wooden bowls.
We really really wanted everything on our list.
We only wanted 1 wooden bowl!!!!!!
Don't be put off by the expensive stuff. We put expensive things on our list - it is supposed to last a lifetime and remind me of my friend betty in 60 years time when I'm 90. Spend £12 on a decent fork it'll last a lifetime and be used at many happy meals. Spend £12 on cheap junk it'll be forgotton about quick!0 -
I had this problem with my brother and I just spoke to him about it. In the end I bought the remaining items of the placemats etc that they needed and also gave them euros for thir honeymoon. He asked for the Euros or a giftcard for the store the list was with so they could buy what was left if needed.:heart2: Got Married on 30/4/11 :heart2:
