I was once short changed, handed her £10 gave me change for £5, pointed out to her I gave her £10 which she disputed, corner shop where I shopped regularly, asked me to go back next day when till was checked, said the till was correct and looked at me accusingly.
Since then I always put my initials on the back of notes before going shopping, they can't dispute that when I ask them to check the notes for my sig on the back, this does work!

On a seperate note, I find more than getting short changed, I often seem to end up being given fake pound coins in my change or american dimes instead of 5p or jersey coins/american cents instead of 1p. Of course you never notice until you try and get rid of it at a self-serve checkout or vending machine and it wont accept it!!.
I'm convinced my local tesco's give their dodgy coins out in change on purpose to try and get rid of them!

Yeah, I hate that too! I once got chucked off a bus for the sake of a 1p that turned out to be in US cents. And at that time I'd never even been to the US...

These days I do travel a lot and it's easy for the change to get mixed up - I try to make sure I'm paying in the right currency but I do object to the accusing glances when a genuine mistake happens.

Although on my last trip to the US one cashier got incredibly excited about a 10p with the real Queen's head on it! I gave it to him as a gift, just for the look on his face.

  • i don't get short changed very often, but i do make the point of saying "sorry i've nothing smaller" if im paying for something that is say £2 with a £10 note, or £7 with a £20. i hate to be mugged of my own money, so i do my best to keep the cashier concentrated on their job! best way to not be short changed?
make them really acknowledge you have that certain note. make a point of it! :D x

I once found I had a US dime in my change as a student and needed the bus. I had exact change and treated the dime as 5p. I handed the driver a stack of coins with the dime in the middle and he didn't question me:D

    I've been Money Tipped!
I remember once, when I was working in a busy pub in London, This bloke was waving a twenty pound note frantically in the air, trying to get served. Luckily a friend had already warned me about him and his tricks so when he went to pay with a ten pound note, I made a point of making sure that the people stood next to him, saw that it was a ten!

Apparently his thing was to make sure everyone saw it was a twenty, pay with a ten then accuse the barstaff of short-changing him!! Of course the rest of the queue at the bar would then back him up :mad:

Back in June/july when Mr t's had an offer on OJ I got to the till in an small express. I had 18 litres of OJ and the till said -£3.50 so I asked for 40 cigs, new total about £9. The guy serving me was the store manager and he didn't even question the amount!! Got the same deal 3 times from the same guy!

Card payments only for me. Cannot understand why people use cash except for sub-£5 purchases as some shops do of course have a "lower limit" for sales value.

Some shops won't take cards at all (yep, they still exist!).
