Being short-changed in shops ...

Hi! Are you being short-changed in shops? Do you check and challenge? This year it has happened to me so regularly - about once a week - that I felt the need to express my horror of this insidious practice. It has occurred in all stores, from Marks & Spencer down, and is usually £1 or £2. Either the wrong change is given or, as happened today, the wrong money tendered is rung up. I gave a £10 note, the cashier put in £9 and gave me change for that. I challenged it, gently and I hadn't left the till, and after some bluster was given the correct change.
Please everyone let's stamp this out ... CHECK AND CHALLENGE!
Thank you.

I always check change but often try to walk out without picking up my cashback!!! I am always stopped by the cashier so I think by and large people are honest - Its awful that its happening so much to you.0

Never been shortchanged, as I generally count it out as they are getting it and handing it over. If it's down I'll say it there and then....hasn't happened in years. If you haven't got it - please don't flaunt it. TIA.0

I sometimes wonder if I have a stamp on my forehead saying 'This woman is an old idiot, either ignore or short-change her.' er ... I am not aware I have a persecution complex ...:hello:0

It rarely happens to me as normally i pay by card, last time i can think of was in M&S too and was a round pound.
If its wrong i`ll always let them know either way as i`ve also been given too much change on occasion too.

Yes, happens to husband regularly as well, especially in local Mr T. Same as you, not the odd 1p or 2p but £1. Although he's only in his 40's he has a penchant for a flat cap and unfortunately, has to use a walking stick - I reckon they must look at him and think they're on a winner! What they don't realise is he has no problem holding a queue of people up while he checks what change he's been given. Me, I feel the pressure of people waiting and never check but will start doing.:)
I do think it's done on purpose though cos when he tells them it's wrong they just give him the £1 - no questions asked, no double checking what they've given him etc.three things for the life aheadFaith Hope and plenty of Charity0 -
I always check coins (i rarely need change of even one note) and I don't think it's ever happened to me, though I have been given too much a few times. Have you reported it to managers in these shops that are doing it several times? If it seems intentional I would take a note of the person who does it and let the manager know if one person does it a lot- chances are they will have robbed people of a lot of money.Living cheap in central London :rotfl:0

Well that was my worry too. But then I thought are the shops quietly exploiting this? Frightening innit?:hello:0

But they wouldn't be training staff to deliberately short change customers, if it was a till error then you should tell them.
Personally i would see it as the cashier trying to subsidise their wages...0 -
Hi,
This is not exactly short changing but our local Londis is terrible for not ringing up the offers at the till.
For example, they had cooked meat at £2.25 or 2 for £3.00, these two packets went through at £4.50 with no discount  Fortunately I did notice but its not the first time its happened either.0 -
usually I am not short changed as I check my monies carefully, but recently in Ald* I was shortchanged by £5. I know I gave the girl £10 but she was insistant it was £5. Couldnt have been as I had just been to the bank and the cash machine paid out in £10s! she told me to check back after the end of the day. Did, but she was insistant that she was right. I never use her till now. thing is, I had come across her in a previous job and she was accused of being a tea leaf then (not by me) and she recognised me and looked at me very smugly. Oh well, Karma happens.....:(SPC Nbr.... 1484....£800 Saved £946 in 2013)
