Refreezing Vegetables twice?

Options
Hi everyone, not really sure if this is a stupid question or not...

I have just started doing my monthly meal planners and trying to cut down on costs, and earlier in the month i made a vegetable shepherds pie (using no mince, just brocolli stalks, potatoes, peas etc.) i froze the 'mince' mixture that was left over and have used it for dinner this evening, however, i still have about another portion of the 'mince' mix and really don't want to throw it away, would it be possible to re-freeze?

I know you shouldn't do this with meat but was unsure of vegetables. I've never done it before :o

TIA

It will be fine, it may be a little bit mushy but it can be done.

If its holding too much water afterwards you can mash it and make bubble & squeak with a twist :D

Thanks, i was hoping for those answers lol, my shepherds pie goes in the oven for about 3 hours on really low anyway, so it will definately be cooked! Seems to ok today, so may just add some thick gravy to it when i next use it and make it go even further! :p

(that is, i've only one portion but theres two of us, so if i add gravy i can stretch it to both of us...not that i will then refreeze it again!! :o)

Thanks for asking this. I have done it myself but always wondered. Oh, and thanks for mentioning the shepherds pie. I have leftover mince and veg mixture, CBA to make pastry, so will use it to make a wee individual pie for dh lunch!

No problem, i thought i was just being stupid.

In my head i was thinking 'its only meat that cannot be re-frozen after its cooked once, frozen and defrosted' but that doesn't mean to say the same problems exist for vegetables!

And i would have thrown it away...:wall:

Just shows how much we learn on here, doesn't it? I throw out much, much less than ever before. Everything gets frozen here! Even one spoonful of leftover mash will get made into a wee potato bread and frozen til I have enough for a fry up!

Its true, i'm still amazed at how much i learn just from here everyday! But i still can't help but get excited over a saving!

And i was always the one in the family that everyone said had no chance with money, now i save more than anyone and will only pay for something on discount! :T Go MSE! lol

I`ve learnt so much over the last few years that its quite amazing the difference that its made to our lives.

We kept our house when it looked as if we were going to lose it, managed to get by (and not uncomfortably so) on half our previous income and pay off all our debts.

I have so much to thank the posters on these boards for and its nice to feel like part of a huge happy family

There is no reason why any food, including meats, cannot be frozen more than once (even without changing its state). The 'general' advice given is, as in many things, erring on the side of caution and set to the lowest common denominator (that is people who are lacking much/any sense).

If meats are defrosted slowly in a refrigerator then they can indeed be re-frozen without undue risk. The problem arises when people thaw at room temperature, which allows microbes to start breeding on the defrosted part whilst the centre is still frozen.... defrost in the fridge and this is largely avoided.

Naturally, all foods suffer some degree of loss of texture on each freezing and thawing, but that will only lessen the palatability and not cause any harm.
If you feel my comments are helpful then I'd love it if you 'Thanked' me! :)

Wow, now its things like this that make me want to save (no offence meant, just in case) I have always wante my own house, and at 22 i am currently thinking this is not really going to happen any time soon, however, if i manage to save (and i do this a lot better than anyone else i know) then i'll be one step ahead of the rest of them!

At least this forum (not much of the rest of society) has their heads screwed on, have great family lives and manage to help out the rest of us that know no better! :T A big thank you to you all, without you, i would never get by!

Just off to T's, lets see what whoopsies they offer today :D
