Ridiculous gas usage figures - faulty meter or boiler?

I remember news about an Energy employee actually confusing Metric units with Imperial units... and somebody got ENORMOUS bills.
So here, is it possible the meter itself has had a wrong label/wrong gearing or something. Something is definitely wrong here.0 -

If that were the case, instead of using 90kWh per hour he would be using approx 250kWh per hour!!
The problem to which you refer happens quite often and is when someone has a Metric meter(where gas unit is approx 11kWh) but they are billed for an Imperial meter(where a gas unit is approx 32kWh.0 -

We had that on our meter since we'd moved in. It was approx 3 times cheaper than it would have been. Meter readers hadnt spotted it for years but 2 years ago they must have done an audit and amended the billing but didnt backdate it.Remember the saying: if it looks too good to be true it almost certainly is.0 -

Yours was the other way around!
You had an Imperial meter but were billed for a Metric meter.
The OP has a metric meter and he is using 8.4 gas units an hour which he has correctly calculated as approx 90kWh.0 -
Finally got round to do another reading with boiler/central heating all on
1st reading 9342 (207 in red digits)
1 hour later 2nd reading 9350 (556 in red digits)
Again works out at over 8 units/cubic metres
Beginning to think I have entered the Twilight Zone as by all comments (and everything else I have read) this does seem impossible!0 -

Hopefully.... you will get a shedload of money back..... Hope so !0 -
Thanks for everyone's help. Unfortunately before I had a chance to get the meter checked my boiler developed a problem and I've had to switch it off until I can get someone out to sort it. Such is life!0
