Insuring a house I own but my mother lives in

Some time ago my mother signed her house to my name.
I live in a different house but I always seem to have problems finding insurance companies who will insure the house she lives in as it's not my private residence and not being the owner they have told me she can't insure the property in her name.
The company who have accepted the insurance I have been with for a number of years but the lack of options available means I can't search for more competitive quotes.
Any advice or suggestions ?

i'm in the same situation, and basicly insure my mother inlaws buildings insurance as a landlord through c i a insurance.it's best to call them for a quote rather then doing it online,so you can explaine that there is no rent involvved.as far as contents insurance is concerned, then your mum should have no problems takeing a policy in her name.i haved used c i a for the last five years and they always seem to come out as the cheapest.also recently had to make a small claim and it was fairly trouble free to do so.0

hi yes i did as i found it to be the most cost effective way of insureing the propety,i tried to insure through standard home insurance companys, but found that once ii explained that i wasn't living at the addresse, they wouldnt insure, bear in mind this was about 5 yrs ago.it may have changed now though, probably best to contact a local brooker, but i'm happy with the service and price i get from c i a for now anyway.Did you have to request a landlord's insurance policy ?0 -
I asked my insurance company about insuring my adjoining recently-reburbished cottage for my mother to live in. They said it didn't count as a granny annexe as it wasn't attached, so I needed landlord insurance.
I got a much better landlord quote online. You can include landlord's contents, or not, depending on how you want to classify ownership of the contents. Either way, it was surprisingly cheap. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0
