Windat attachments

Over the last few weeks a few people have sent me emails with attachments in windat. I can't open these however. Does anyone know what software is required to open these attachments and is it available on line? I have Office and Works on my computer already.
PS I know the people in question and am sure the attachments are genuine as it is info I am expecting from them, but even though I've asked them to resend in a different format, they haven't got round to this yet, and I would like the info sooner rather than later.
Thanks for any help

What email application are you using to read your mail? Is it an email program (i.e. Outlook) or webmail?
The win.dat/winmail.dat problem is caused by the sender having their email program incorrectly set up to use a proprietary format to send email (TNEF; a Microsoft thing) instead of MIME (the global standard).
You can use a program like this one http://www.eolsoft.com/freeware/winmail_opener/ to view the contents of the win.dat/winmail.dat file.0 -
Thanks. I'm using XP but not Outlook, just my standard Orange email account. I've tried to download some decoders (tried two different versions) but no joy, and asked the sender to resend as a word attachment, but they are under the impression that's what they're doing. I don't really want to open an Outlook account just for this, but if its going to be a recurring problem maybe I'll need to. if anyone has any other ideas I'd be grateful.0

Ask the sender(s) to use Plain Text in lieu of Rich Text. If they require instructions, refer them to these:0
