Netbook won't load XP

Having a look at my friend's daughter's netbook, it's getting a blue screen of death (BSOD) before it reboots.

Won't load normally or in any of the safe modes. Have tried last know good configuration and Directory services restore which also give a BSOD

Have then tried Ultimate Boot CD for windows - this won't load and a Bart PE disc which also gives a BSOD!!!

Was going to do a factory restore but can't figure out how to do that, would have thought there would be a way without discs as there is no cd drive???

Any other thoughts please.

  • Try going into bios (usually F1 or F10) then see if there is a restore option within.

You could also try booting up with a ubuntu live disk on a USB drive.
  • Try posting the issue on Pcexpert's forums there will be a better chance of finding someone with the know how.

This site has never let me down yet :D

Tried the Bios (F2) but no obvious options in there :(

What would booting to ubuntu enable me to do?

    Thanks

TT is right, we need the make & model to advise further. All netbooks should have a factory restore partition accessed by pressing a certain F-key on boot-up. As they all differ in whick key it is, make & model is essential info :)
    ......Gettin' There, Wherever There is......

I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple :D
  • can I be really cheeky and tailgate onto this.
I have posted the same problem elsewhere on this techie forum but these are different answers.
The notebook in question is a Dell Inspiron mini 10, model no. 1011-8936.
Which F key would I need to press to see if there is a restore facility?
I have already been into F2 and F12 but to no effect.
    Many thanks.:o

If this is happening, why would a factory restore be any different?
    Move along, nothing to see.

Dell manual From Page 40 use Ctrl + F11
    Move along, nothing to see.
  • Thanks for that.
Have just given it a go and either get a continuous sound like a bell if I hold Ctrl+F11 down continuously after pressing power on or if I tap the F11 key continuously whilst holding down Ctrl then I still get the same error message of 'disk read error'.
    Am I done for?

    Try this

Solution to Restoring Dell Mini 10 to factory settings on Windows 7 Starter
Restart the computer and press F8 when you receive the Dell loading screen and keep holding it till it the computer beeps , then release it and you’ll find
that you get into a Windows loading screen it gives you a variety of options – select the “Repair your computer” option by highlighting it using your arrow
    keys and press enter.
You’ll now be asked to login to your machine, you’ll need to use the same username/password that you use to access Windows normally.
Now, instead of accessing Windows you’ll get a screen with a whole variety of options at the bottom, of that list you’ll find a hyperlink that allows you to
select “Dell Factory Restore Image” – select this and follow the on screen instructions.
  • Does it make a difference that this netbook is running XP, NOT W7?

I tried what you said anyway and it gave me the options of F2 or F12 only, both of which I've tried to search through but couldn't see any options of a factory restore?
    Thanks for answering.:j
